Can I have new lenses inserted in all sunglasses?

Basically yes. Exceptions are glasses with a continuous, so-called mono lens or panorama shape. There are also prescription sports glasses that are very strongly curved. As a rule, only lenses up to a maximum of 2 diopters can be fitted into these frames. It should also be noted that glasses for nearsighted people get much thicker towards the edge and that this can be very noticeable with curved glasses and destroy the cool look of the sunglasses. Sunglasses frame as glasses

Would you like to wear your casual sunglasses as glasses because they look so good on you? Possibly not a very good idea: sunglasses for women in particular often have really large frames – for increased protection against UV radiation. With dark glass, these look daring and mysterious. With clear corrective lenses (or only slightly tinted lenses), however, the whole thing can quickly look like an owl or a frog – bold is different. If you are not into owls, you should choose the frame one size smaller.

Re-glazing sunglasses: do I get the original lens with my values?

No. The original sunglasses lenses are removed from the frame and included in your delivery. The prescription glasses are individually manufactured and fitted into the sunglasses frame. But be careful: When ordering, remember to add a tint, otherwise the lenses will be delivered as regular, clear corrective lenses.

Changing the sunglasses lens: the right tint

If you want to have new glasses inserted into your sunglasses, you should keep in mind that they only provide adequate protection against UV light if the degree of tint is correct. This should be at least 75 percent, if you read with your glasses at the pool or want to go into the mountains, you should even better choose an 85 percent tint. In our digital optician there are up to 20 different tint colors to choose from, from azure blue to gray to gold-mirrored. These nuances usually deviate slightly from the original color of the sunglasses chosen. Some manufacturers such as Ray Ban even have original prescription lenses on which the Ray-Ban logo is engraved. The tint is then exactly the same as with regular sunglasses.

Depending on the manufacturer, polarizing lenses are also available online (for example with Ray-Ban sunglasses). Polarizing sunglasses have the advantage that they filter reflections from smooth surfaces such as water, wet streets or even white walls and thus relieve the eyes immensely. Polarized lenses are therefore ideal for outdoor activities or beach vacations.

Special case of self-tinting lenses

Self-tinting prescription glasses are a nice thing if you don’t want to lug around two glasses. These photochromic glasses are equipped with light-sensitive molecules that react to UV radiation and darken the glass according to the brightness. So you are well equipped on the way home from a lunch snack outside in strong sunlight to the gloomy hallway. However, caution is advised if you want to retrofit a sunglasses frame with such lenses: If the lenses are darkened in sunlight, the frame looks like regular sunglasses. In interiors, however, the tint is missing and the owl effect described above threatens again due to the mostly larger glass diameter.
