Reasons to Study Geology

Geologists could be seen as the stewards tasked with the responsibility of taking care of the earth’s resources. You might be thinking about pursuing a career in geology but you’re not really sure if it is the right thing to do. It is seen as a conflicting area for some people yet concepts are pretty straightforward. Here are some of the reasons why you should consider studying geology if you’re still unsure about the career path that you should be pursuing.

You Do More than Study Rocks

A lot of people are of the assumption that all a geologist does is to study rocks. The truth is a geologist will do a lot more than that. It is the work of a geologist to explore how the planet works. The rocks were formed at some point. There had to be physical conditions to make it possible. A geologist will try and attempt to answer questions to do with the physical nature of planet earth. They can also model changes so that we know what to expect in the future. If you thought geology was all about studying rocks then you better think again.

Endless Career Opportunities

There has been an increase in the number of opportunities in the field. This perhaps one of the main reasons you should seriously consider it as a career path. There was a recent study that was published by Forbes in which Geology was ranked as the 7th most valuable Major in college. This should be more than enough reason to seriously consider studying it as a career. It can also be used as a foundation to prepare for other careers that have to do with earth science. This brings us to the next point.

Foundation for Other Careers

You might have thought about concentrating on collecting fossils. In order to do so, it is imperative to have an understanding of the earth. How the different elements have impacted the natural environment.  Having a good understanding of Fossilicious formation is something that will be easier if you have a background in geology. It might seem like a big obstacle but it won’t be hard to overcome provided you enjoy what you’re doing.

You Become a Conscious of the Environment

Global warming has been a subject for debate for the last couple of years. There has been an increase in carbon emissions and we might not leave sustainable earth for future generations. As a geologist, you’ll obviously take such a concern to heart given the nature of your job. You get to be appreciative of the natural environment and you’ll make sure that you’re doing your part in preserving it. There is an ever-increasing demand for energy and there are depleting resources. Everything has been stretched and a geologist is well aware of this fact. You will want to do your part in whichever way possible so that we’re having a better earth to live in.

Help in Preparation for Natural Disasters

As a geologist, you might be tasked with figuring out the areas that are prone to natural disasters. It could be a volcanic eruption, flooding, landslide, and a lot more. Earthquakes can be predicted before they happen and a geologist can help with the process. You will be responsible for saving many lives which is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Outdoor Living

As a geologist, you can choose to be outdoors for the most part. You get to interact with nature which is one of the best feelings in the world. There are some expeditions that will require that you’re out in the field doing research and collecting data. There are people that will find such work to be enjoyable. There are not a lot of careers that present such an opportunity.

Different Specializations

You don’t have to be out in the field. There are people that will prefer working behind the scenes. You can take the path of being an academician which is just as rewarding. The fact that there are a couple of options is a good reason why you should consider a career in geology.

Conclusion

Just as with many careers, there will be challenges along the way. The key is to be passionate about what you do. You will find it enjoyable and fulfilling. Geology is an interesting career path as you get to deal with issues that directly affect us. From food security to global warming you’ll be at the heart of it when it is happening.
