Signs of A Clogged Drain And How To Fix Them

Clogged drains are something that you never think about… until that moment that your drain becomes completely blocked and you cannot use it anymore!

Keeping your drains clear and working as they should do is really important, not just for your own convenience, but because if you leave a clogged drain for too long it can actually start to cause damage to your plumbing. This can be costly to fix.

Toilet is Not Draining

This is the moment that haunts most of us in our dreams. The toilet has become clogged and we do not know how to unblock it. We cannot tell anyone because that would be hideously embarrassing… what do we do?

The first thing to do is not to panic and repeatedly flush the toilet. Doing this is likely to cause it to overflow if there is a blockage. There are a few things you can try to unclog a toilet:

  • If you can see the blockage, then you might be able to clear it using your hands. Toilets are not sanitary, so put on a long pair of rubber gloves before trying this. Once you have cleared the blockage, try flushing again to see if the problem has been resolved.
  • If you cannot see the blockage then chances are that it is in u bend. Try clearing it with a plunger or breaking it down with an enzyme waste removal product.
  • You can actually make your own toilet un-blocker using a combination of hot water, baking soda, and vinegar.

Bad Odor Coming From Drains

If you notice a bad smell coming from your drains, it usually means that there is a blockage somewhere. The combination of whatever is causing the blockage, along with stagnant water, can start to get quite pungent after a while.

The first thing to do if you have smelly drains is to give your sinks and toilets clean with bleach, or a mixture of baking soda with vinegar and hot water. For your sinks, fill them with hot water and bleach and then allow it to drain through. For your toilet, spray bleach around the bowl and then flush through. The bleach or baking soda should break down whatever is causing the issue.

If the trouble persists, then it is a good idea to contact a plumber. Just search for drain cleaning near me and get in touch with a reputable firm.

Water Rising Around Your Feet In The Shower

If you find that water is rising around your feet in the shower, then your drain is probably blocked with hair.

To unclog your shower drain see if you can remove the hair with your hands, and then flush the drain through with boiling water. If this does not do the trick, try using a drain snake, or flushing it through with vinegar and baking soda.

To prevent your shower drain from becoming clogged it is a good idea to put a strainer over the plus hole to catch loose hair. You can also give your hair a brush before washing it to remove any loose hair.
