Smoothie for Cleansing and Improving Gut Health

Gut health is one of the most important aspects of our overall health. The gut, or the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, is the long tube that starts at the mouth and ends at anus. The health of the gut is largely determined by our eating habits—the food we eat, how we eat it, and how much of it we eat—as well as by the healthy balance of the microorganisms that live within the gut.

The community of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, yeast, parasites, etc.) is collectively referred to as the “gut microbiome,” and it contains about 100 trillion live microorganisms that promote normal GI function, protect the body from infection, and regulate metabolism and the mucosal immune system. They play a crucial role in both our digestive health and in our body’s immune response.

As diet is so essential to our gut health, and therefore our overall health, it’s important that we find foods that can help improve our gut health and keep us feeling healthy and happy. One amazing food that do this is a Tropical Gut Restoration smoothie:

This simple smoothie recipe consists of:

  • 2 Bananas
  • 1 mango, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup of pineapple chunks
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • Chia seeds for garnish

Instructions

Peel and dice your mango. Combine mango, banana, pineapple and water/milk into blender and blend until smooth. Pour into serving cup and top with chia seeds.

Makes about 3 cups. Serves 1 generously, or 2 smaller portions.

Health Benefits

Now that we’ve covered what the smoothie is made of, let’s discuss the health benefits and how this simple smoothie helps to improve gut health:

Bananas

Bananas are a great source of various essential nutrients, like potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Copper, and Manganese. They are also rich in fiber, with one banana containing an average of 3.1 grams. Fiber plays a major role in digestive health. Fiber is the fuel the colon cells use to keep them healthy. Fiber also helps to keep the digestive tract flowing, by keeping your bowel movements soft and regular.

Mango

Mangoes are a rich source of Vitamin C—and they’re delicious! Vitamin C works alongside other nutrients (mainly the amino acids L-Proline and L-Lysine) to build collagen, which is the most abundant protein in the body, and the protein responsible for building much of the body’s tissues, including those of the gut lining. Collagen health is essential to gut health, and Vitamin C plays a critical role in the process of Collagen Synthesis. Mangoes are also a good source of fiber, potassium and Vitamin A

Pineapple

Pineapple is an amazing fruit for gut health that contains many digestive enzymes. In particular, pineapples contain a group of digestive enzymes called bromelain. These enzymes are proteases, which break down protein into its building blocks, including amino acids. This aids the digestion and absorption of proteins and are great for enhancing digestive health.

Almond Milk

Almond milk is an excellent and natural source of vitamin E, which is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect your body from free radical damage Almonds also serve as prebiotics—non-digestible carbohydrates/plant fiber that feed the good bacteria already living in the gut.

Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds are a great source of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber bulks up stool, feeds friendly bacteria in the gut and helps slow digestion to make you feel satisfied. It also helps manage blood sugar.

Detoxing Herbs

Combining this tropical gut restoration smoothie with detoxifying natural herbs is a great way to really take your gut health to the next level. The brand Zuma Nutrition has an amazing natural parasite detox tincture that is very synergistic with the above nutrients and provides additional colon cleansing and immune supporting benefits.

Probiotics

If you choose to add some probiotics to the smoothie or to take probiotic capsules along with the smoothie, you can enhance the digestive benefits of this Tropical Gut Restoration smoothie by giving your body beneficial strains of bacteria that can help to maintain balance in your gut microbiome.

Together, these ingredients make for a truly gut-friendly smoothie, and one that works in several different ways to nourish your body and restore your gut. The best part of it all, is that it tastes amazing! Eating healthy can also be delicious, and this smoothie recipe is a real testament to this.
