Spring Spruce-Up: Prepping Your Home for the Warm Weather

Finally, spring is just around the corner. The days are getting longer, and the flowers are starting to bloom. Soon you’ll have the opportunity to open your windows and let the warm breeze flow through your home. But after a long, harsh winter, is your house ready for the spring weather? Prepping your home for the season goes well beyond vacuuming and dusting. Do you remember the last time you checked the smoke alarms? What about your air conditioner? When did you last change the air filters?

The spring is the perfect time to tend to such crucial home improvement tasks. As the birds begin to settle into your back garden, you can also get your home ready for the sunny, warm-season ahead by sprucing it up, inside and out. Read on to check out our maintenance list.

Clean the Gutters

Debris — such as leaves and dirt — collects inside your gutters over the winter, which can cause significant damage to your roof, foundation, and house exterior. Routinely cleaning them out will prevent such damage from occurring, saving you thousands of dollars in possible repair costs. Tending to the gutters in the spring will prepare them for the heavy rain that commonly occurs this time of year.

Check Smoke Alarms

Over time, the smoke alarm batteries die, and other parts of the detector will wear out. Walk around your house and test your smoke alarms to ensure that your home is safe if there’s a fire. To do this, press the smoke detector test button. It may take a second or two, but it should set off a piercingly-loud alarm while you press the button. Is the noise weak, quiet, or nonexistent? If so, it’s time for a replacement.

Get a Professional Air Conditioner Maintenance Check-up

Soon you’ll have the air conditioner on full-blast to combat the summer heat and humidity. Your unit has probably been turned off for several months and needs a tune-up. You must whip that air conditioner back into shape before the first heatwave hits. To get your AC working for the upcoming warmer months, contact your local and trusted HVAC contractors for a check-up. A professional technician will conduct thorough AC maintenance. They’ll ensure that your AC unit is clean and safe by changing any dirty filters and checking that your ducts are in good condition for the season ahead.

Purge Your Closets

Do you have a closet full of clothing you haven’t worn in years? Have you ever considered selling or donating your used items? Getting rid of old belongings is such a freeing feeling. Take an afternoon to go through your closets and toss anything that you no longer feel attached to anymore. You could even make some extra cash by selling your goods on a website such as Kijiji or Etsy. You’ll air out the inside of your home just in time for spring.

By cleaning the gutters, checking up on your air conditioner, testing the smoke alarms, and making space in your home, your house will be as good as new, just in time for spring.
