Spring Tactics For Success On Stillwater

As the days become longer and the weather becomes milder, the conditions make for much better chances of success at the bank. Spring sees an increase in activity from Stillwater trout so dust of your kit, stock up on the right fishing bait and head back down to your favourite spot. We’ve pulled together some of our top tips to help you prepare for the season and hopefully make your biggest catch yet!

1. Give your equipment a spring clean

Unless you’re one of the more organised anglers, it is likely that your gear has been stored for some time now and you’ve got old bits and bobs which aren’t fit for purpose any longer. As the season comes round, declutter your kit and give your equipment a good clean so it is ready to go when you are. Double check that you have everything you need and ensure it is still in full working order so you can organise any repairs or replacements in due course.

2. Prepare your flies

Fly fishing is not fly fishing without the flies, so ensure yours are ready for the season. Take a close look at any in your kit as they may look okay on first glance, but a closer inspection can show up any flaws. Any signs of rust can risk your hook breaking as you make a catch, a particularly frustrating experience that we’d recommend avoiding! Any minor signs of rust can be removed by sharpening, but it’s time to replace the ones which have been overused.

3. Check your lines

A good quality line has potential to give you plenty of use, but that is assuming it is taken care of properly. Look for signs of cracking, discolouration or faults which are key indicators that it’s time for a new one. Although you may think it still has life left in it, a poor fly line can have an impact on your performance so ensure that you have a quality line which is taken good care of.

4. Get your waders at the ready

Waders are an essential part of fly fishing, allowing you to stay in the water for hours on end with the protection you’ll need. The water is still particularly cold in the spring months so keep it away from your skin and prevent not only discomfort, but the risk of health issues from the cold temperatures. If you already have a pair of waders in your kit, double check that there are no punctures which will cause leaking.

5. Plan your hot spots

More often than not, it is better to move around instead of staying stationary. Unless you are lucky enough to find a spot which keeps providing you with sightings or catches, move your net to a new spot to broaden your search. On sunny days, the shallows are a favourite spot so try and nab a good position or if not, wade to a more undisturbed area and keep yourself moving.
