The 5 Daily Habits Of Successful DJs

You love music and enjoy seeing people have a great time. You have gone on Channel DJ, researched the best DJ equipment, and bought it. You have even booked some gigs. However, you are now wondering what you can do to become more successful in your DJ career.

Success looks different to everyone. You will first have to discover what success looks like to you. Write down your goals. I know you keep seeing that writing down your goals will help you reach them. As much as writing down your goals sounds like a cliché, it is quite helpful in knowing where you want to be and when.

This may sound intimidating if this is your first time doing it. Nevertheless, you can start by writing down which skills you need to perfect and when you want to achieve that. You can even go further and indicate how many minutes or hours you will spend on each skill.

Detailing your next steps will help you realize which habits you will need to form and how to prioritize what is important. What you do behind the scenes will help you master your skill and set you above others.

Develop a schedule

Having a schedule applies to everyone and will make a huge difference in your life. Since you are basically working a night shift, it is so easy to get into the nightlife culture and find yourself spending all your time partying.

Schedule your gigs around your calendar and not the other way around. This will allow you to rest and recuperate. It will also give you time to do other things that are not career related. You can start by writing down what you will do after every gig, including when you wake up.

Practice

This goes without saying. The only way to grow your skill is to spend time on it. Therefore, discover the best time for you to practice. Is your mind fresh as soon as you wake up? Do you need a cup of coffee first? Find out what works best for you and schedule it. If you need a reminder, add it.

One way to help you practice is to place your equipment somewhere you can easily see and access it. That way, you will constantly be reminded to practice.

Keep learning

Learning never ends. There are many skills you can grow as a DJ. There is no DJ, even the most established one, who can claim to know everything. They are also learning, growing, and looking for ways to better themselves.

Consequently, take time to grow your skills. There are different ways to do this:

  • Master your equipment. There is nothing as bad as a DJ who doesn’t know what they are doing. Know your gear inside out.
  • Learn new DJing techniques. There are many ways to create a great mix, and you can go above the basic DJ techniques to do so.
  • Get training. There is a wealth of information out there, so watch tutorials, and if you can and have the time, get training.

Talk to different DJs. You will always learn something new when you meet different people in the industry. Social media has made it easy for you to reach out to people, and you can maximize this. Networking is not only reserved for CEOs and business executives.

Grow your music selection

We all have specific music genres that we love. However, you need to intentionally look for new music. Do not only rely on your music selection.

Most music streaming services like Youtube and Spotify have millions of songs and different playlists you can listen to. Take advantage of that.

Furthermore, listening to different music will grow your music library and help you learn how to work with different types of tracks. You will also be prepared for when you get a request for a song that is not on your setlist.

Also, new music keeps coming up, and you need to keep up with the times.

Be prepared

This goes without saying. Winging it can only take you so far. Take time to prepare your setlist before your next performance. Many things can go wrong, like lack of internet, and it is great to be prepared.

Write down what you need for your gig beforehand. This will help you keep time. People do not like to wait, and they may end up giving you bad reviews. And we all know, as great as you may be, the fans’ views are just as important.

In addition, make sure your music is organized so that if you are called for an impromptu gig, you will be able to create a setlist without pressure.

Most Importantly

Be yourself. Do not imitate other people or their sounds. Discover your own sound and perfect it. If you choose a niche, focus on it and bring your uniqueness to it, even if many DJs are doing the same thing.

Moreover, success is not achieved in a day. The little things we do every day will determine what your career will look like and when you will achieve success.
