The Proper Ways To Prepare Your Home Interior Walls For Tiling

Contrary to popular beliefs, preparing your wall for tiling is indeed an easy task provided you know the basics. You only need the correct mindset, know-how, patience and equipment. You can proceed to decorate your walls in various types of textures & surfaces, but preparing the wall beforehand is extremely crucial.

In this in-depth guide, we’ll be sharing some of the critical steps that you can undertake to make your walls ready for tiling.

Methods To Follow When Preparing A Wall For Tiling

  • Surface Preparation

According to a professional handyman in Perth, the first thing that you should ensure is that you have a completely level surface on which you can put up your tiles. If you don’t inspect the surface for proper levelling, then you can end up tiling an uneven surface – leading to a complete disaster. Spot any sort of bumps or irregularities, which will tell you whether you have a level wall surface.

If your wall surface is even, then you don’t have to worry much and start the tiling process. However, if the surface is uneven, then you have to first make it level and then you can think of tiling. We suggest consulting a professional handyman to help you level your wall surface.

  • Adhesive Preparation

Choosing and applying the correct adhesive for your tiling process is crucial. The adhesive that you’ll end up choosing will depend upon your tile material. Since different tile materials have different hardness, absorption and size, you’ll need a specific type of adhesive that will perfectly complement your tiles.

Besides, before you start mixing your adhesive, you have to read the instructions denoted by the manufacturer, on the adhesive bag. Not all adhesives will have the same mixing instructions. So, if you want to have the perfect consistency in your adhesive material, ensure that you don’t add too little or too much water into the mix. Do only as told by the manufacturer.

  • Combing The Wall

Once you’ve created the adhesive mix, it’s time to apply the same to the wall. Ensure that you spread the adhesive consistently across the wall so that the tiles can bond well and there are no failures. To comb the wall, you have to use a trowel. The size of the trowel will depend on the size of the tile you’re using. Furthermore, make sure you use a thin layer of adhesive.

  • Laying The Tile

Now that all the preparation has been made, it’s time to position and lay the tile onto the wall. Place the tile onto the adhesive layer.

Once done, you have to use a tile levelling system to level the tile, based on the surrounding tiles. You also have to use a cross-spacer on each corner of the tile, so that each tile has a perfectly aligned joint.
