The Top Mistakes to Avoid with a Driving Under the Influence Charge

A Driving Under the Influence charge is a pretty big deal. Just the knowledge of this can make you panic which, in turn, can result in you making mistakes that can compromise your case and your freedom. As this is something that you clearly want to avoid, here are all the errors that you should steer clear of:

Trying to Handle the Problem by Yourself

On the surface, your charges may seem pretty easy to deal with. For instance, the police may have already explained the steps that you need to take. Or, you may feel like you have found enough information on the internet to help you tackle the issue by yourself.

Here’s the reality, though – a DUI case is notoriously complex and tricky to handle. Thus, you absolutely need an experienced attorney by your side, helping you along. Attempting to do this alone may put you in a worse position and may potentially complicate your consequences.

Hiring a Cheap Lawyer

Now, after considering “should I fight a DUI charge?”, you may have come to the conclusion that you should hire an attorney, but you are going to employ the cheapest one around. Now, this decision is understandable as lawyers can get pretty pricey. Unfortunately, cheap attorneys also don’t have a great deal of experience in the field and may not know the best way to proceed.

This doesn’t automatically mean that you should hire the most expensive lawyer around. There are actually some excellent mid-tier attorneys that can give you the legal support that you need. The key is to look for lawyers with the right set of skills and experience. Then, you can compare prices and decide which one fits your budget best.

Not Following Your Attorney’s Lead

You will be surprised by the number of people who hire attorneys and then completely ignore their instructions! Don’t make this mistake. Remember, your lawyer knows what they are doing so you should always follow their lead even if they are asking you to tackle time-consuming or tedious tasks – they know what is best for you.

Similarly, if your attorney tells you not to talk to specific people, stay off social media, etc. follow these instructions to the letter! They have a reason for keeping you isolated, as annoying as it may be. Thus, buckle down for a little while.

Listening to Others’ Advice

Everyone likes to imagine that they are a legal expert. This includes family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors, etc. This means that they will often bombard you with advice and tell you what they think you should do. As tempting as it may be, don’t listen to these individuals.

At the very least, run this advice past your lawyer to see if it holds up. In most instances, it will not be pertinent to your case. Thus, do yourself a favor and stick with the advice that you are actually paying for.

These are the main mistakes to avoid at all costs. Now that you are aware of them, it will be a lot easier for you to sidestep these issues and giving yourself a better chance at winning your case.
