These Tips Can Help You To Repair A Buzzing Ceiling Fan

If you need to replace the capacitor of your ceiling fan, you must understand that most ceiling fans have a “starter capacitor” so they can get the boost they need to start spinning their blades. If this capacitor burns out, it must be replaced or the blades will not rotate or will turn incorrectly. Changing a ceiling fan’s starting capacitor is easier than it sounds. When you go to a home improvement center to buy a replacement, take the old capacitor (or its photo). You must get a suitable replacement. Additionally, if you use a ceiling fan to cool master bedroom that is expensive and full of decorations, perhaps you want to hire experts to repair it for you safely.

Then, you might also want to know how to repair a buzzing fan. If your ceiling fan makes a buzzing sound when it’s running, you may be able to eliminate the problem by changing the controls. This is a relatively easy fix, but it may not work if your fan has a very cheap motor—the motor may be shot.

Be sure to purchase a control compatible with your fan that has an anti-buzz feature. The amperage rating needs to be the same or bigger than what your fan needs. Some fans or fans with lights may require special controls.

  1. At the circuit breaker, turn off the power that is connected to the fan.
  2. Check the fan switch to make sure it is off.
  3. Remove the plate and switch. Use a voltage tester to make sure the wires connected to the fan switch are not “hot”.
  4. Disconnect the cable from the switch.
  5. Straighten the ends of the wires in the electrical box and twist them together with the new anti-hum fan control wire.
  6. Add a wire nut, turn the control to the electrical box, replace the faceplate, then restore power.

While minor wobbles are typical for ceiling fans, significant wobbles can be dangerous. Start by examining the source of the wobble. In most cases, wobbling occurs when the fan is hung from a regular ceiling electrical box and not an electrical box rated for fans. Due to their weight and constant movement, fans exert a much greater force on the electrical box than the lamp. If the fan comes off, it may collapse.
