Things To Look For When Buying A Baby Floor Mat

A cushioned floor mat can be a real lifesaver if you have children living in your home.

Tummy time can be done on a baby floor mat, which later on can be used as a safe, well-defined play spot for the child or even as a springboard for a future gymnast to get started on their training. A mat will not only protect wood floors from dents and spills, but it will also help cushion early crawlers and walkers if they take one of those inevitable tumbles.

What to look out for when purchasing a floor mat for a nursery:

When looking for a new baby floor mat, there are a few things you should keep in mind, which are as follows:

Modular or one-piece?

Some play mats can be separated into tiles and have pop-out patterns that resemble puzzles; these are designed to help kids with more developed fine-motor skills. Be careful not to give your infant anything too small, as this could present a choking hazard. The other kinds are individual mats that, when not in use, can be rolled up or folded up. Be aware that while a puzzle style can be entertaining, putting it back together can take a significant amount of time. This is especially true if you have a younger sibling who is also in the picture.

Time of Use

Do you want a floor mat that you’ll use once in a while or one that will stay in your house?

There are a few different possibilities, some of which are meant to be left on your floors when playing is done, while others can be moved or put away.

Method of Washing

The majority of them just need to be wiped down with some gentle cleaning wipes or sponged off, but some of them can be washed in the washing machine. Another advantage of the modular designs is that if one of the components becomes extremely cluttered, you can simply pop it out and deal with it on its own.

Size, Shape, and Thickness

If the mat is going to be placed on top of an existing rug, you may usually get away with a mat that is a little bit thinner than usual. You can construct a custom configuration to match a certain region by adding or removing tiles when you are working with a modular mat.

Style

Play mats used to largely just feature brightly colored alphabet squares, and while such are still available, manufacturers have started making play mats with more contemporary-looking designs in recent years. These patterns include zig-zag stripes, dots, and styles that imitate wood floors. You might even select a rug depending on the interests of your young child, such as vehicles or domesticated animals, for example.
