Tips for Writing an Effective Issue Essay for the GRE

One of the essay questions on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is an “issue” essay. This type of essay presents a debatable topic or issue and asks you to take a position on it. You will need to support your position with examples and reasoning.

Here are some tips to help you effectively write an issue essay:

  1. Understand the prompt. Make sure you understand what the prompt is asking you to do. If you are unsure, ask a tutor or professor for clarification.
  2. Brainstorm. Once you understand the prompt, brainstorm potential topics that would fit. Try to come up with at least three different ideas.
  3. Do your research. Once you have settled on a topic, do some research on it. This will help you to better understand the issue and to find supporting evidence for your position.
  4. Develop a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence or two that sum up your main argument. It should be specific and debatable.
  5. Outline your essay. An effective outline will help you to organize your thoughts and to structure your essay in a logical way.
  6. Write your essay. Start with an introduction that grabs the reader’s attention and clearly states your thesis statement. The body of your essay should develop your argument, using evidence and examples to support your position. Be sure to address counterarguments as well. Finally, conclude your essay with a strong conclusion that restates your thesis and leaves the reader with something to think about.
  7. Edit and proofread your essay. Once you have finished writing your essay, take some time to edit it and to check for any errors. Make sure that your essay is clear, concise, and well-written. Ask someone else to read it over as well and to give you feedback.
