Tips to Consider Before a Bathroom Remodel

Are you planning to remodel your bathroom? Then you need to go into the project knowing what to do and how to get the best out of the project. In this article, Master Design Construction takes us through the essential tips to consider before embarking on a bathroom remodel project.

How much Room is Sufficient for a Half Bath?

Modern bathrooms have become nothing short of a masterpiece. This means that more space-saving features will leave your bathroom looking at its finest. One of those features is the half bath. A sink and toilet can go comfortably into an 11-square foot bathroom and still meet the national building code. However, you want a space that is comfortable and feels like home. To achieve that, aim for a 3 to 4 feet wide area and a 6 to 8 feet long space for a perfect bathroom. Of course, speak to your bathroom remodeling contractor on how this fits into the plan they have for your bathroom. Also, confirm that the design is in line with the local codes.

Design for Accessibility

When remodeling your bathroom, consider functionality and aesthetics. You should also aim for a design that addresses all abilities. Consider adding easy-to-grip lever faucets and handheld showers to your bathroom. You can also install permanent features that make your bathroom more accessible for long-term purposes. Some recommended installations include grab bars, barrier-free showers, lower sink heights, wider doorways, and more. You can also seek recommendations from your remodeling contractor.

Make Space for Toiletries

Your bathroom isn’t complete without toiletries. A good way to save space and boost your bathroom’s aesthetics is to make recessed areas in the walls. The recesses can be used to store your toiletries. These areas add taste to your bathroom and also help to cut down on the need for cabinets and countertops. The recesses should be small to medium-sized so that they look beautiful. You can line the insides of the recess with leftover stones, marbles, and other materials that make it easy to wash and maintain. If you are planning your kids into the entire remodel, make knee height recesses that are easy to access for the kids.

Accessories at the Right Height

One of the most important things you can do as part of the remodeling project is to be conscious of functionality. While there are no hard rules regarding the height of bathroom fixtures, be sure to work closely with a professional to choose the right heights and dimensions for bathroom fixtures installation. Fixtures that are at the right height will significantly improve the quality of your life. You can also mark the height of the members of your family and use this as a guide to installing bathroom fixtures.

Get the Wiring Right

If you have an old bathroom to remodel, you need to get an electrician’s perspective on the wiring. Usually, older wiring may be frayed and unable to support newer appliances and loads. You do not want to overload your wires. A good approach ramps things up so that your new bathroom becomes immune to electrical problems like shocks and electrical fires. You may also have to dedicate certain electrical outlets to power-consuming fixtures like electrical heaters and others. Speak to your remodeling contractor on adding 20 amp circuits and outlets at specific areas for appliance use.

Pay Attention to your Floor

Floors become cold over time, especially during the winter months. If you aren’t a fan of cold floors, a good way to address this is by adding electric mats to the underside of your bathroom floors. These mats will do a great job of keeping your bathroom floors warm. You should note that electrical mats are designed to pass on a small amount of heat at a time. This means that it may take some time before your bathroom floors heat up properly. With its programmable thermostat, you do not have to worry about the floors getting too hot to step on.

Lighting and Vanity can add Accent and Set the Mood

The choice of lighting will change the entire outlook of your bathroom. Choose proper lighting to accompany your bathroom vanities and watch the transformation it adds to your home. Before making this a permanent fixture, speak to your contractor about making a mock fixture to see how it feels. If you’re happy with the placement, make it permanent. If it feels out of place, remove it.
