Transform Your Closet – The Right Closet Organizer is a Start!

An organized closet offers several benefits: time saved finding what you need, money saved not purchasing duplicates of items you’ve lost track of in a messy closet, and generally just minimizing the stress that often results from a disorganized space.

When your closet is tidy and organized, everything becomes easy to find – your favourite pair of shoes, those perfectly ripped jeans, and your power suit work ensemble.

Wondering how you can create a fabulously organized closet organized closet where you can find all of your clothes, shoes, and accessories? A high-quality closet organizer and a few handy suggestions can help guide you to the refreshing closet transformation you need.

Closet organizing necessities

The first step to transforming your closet is to collect all the necessary supplies, including a tape measure and your “toss” bin. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time and gather the following items to help you get started:

⦁ Plastic or paper grocery bags: to help collect your items to donate, repair, or go to the cleaners.
⦁ A tape measure and a pencil: get the exact measurements of your space so that you know what size of closet organizer, shelving, or ⦁ furniture to purchase furniture to purchase.
⦁ Mirror (ideally, full-length): don’t be afraid to try on to help you decide what stays and what goes.
⦁ Basket or bin: for all of the dribs and drabs you’re sure to find — bills, hair clips, shoelaces, loose change, receipts, and other stuff you don’t need to organize just yet. Catch it all for later, once you’ve completed your closet transformation.

Empty and clean your entire closet space

You want a blank canvas to work with — remove everything! You can only see the possibilities when you have an empty room. It will also be much easier to measure accurately.

You’ll be amazed at what you will find, particularly if you’ve completely lost track of the contents of your closet. Take everything out: clothes, shoes, baskets, bins, even your hangers and anything else you have on the floor, on shelves, or hanging on hooks.

Dust surfaces, door trim, and hanging rods. Vacuum, and mop floors and baseboards. If you’re going to install a new closet organizer closet organizer, you want your space to be clean beforehand.

Cull your wardrobe

So difficult, but so rewarding! Cull your wardrobe and make the hard decision to donate or sell items — clothing pieces, shoes, accessories — that you know you won’t use.

Try to stop thinking “One day…” or “When I lose 10 pounds…” Let what you enjoy and wear NOW be your guide. Be ruthless and choose to keep only those items you know you will use.

To help organize, separate your items into different piles:

To keep: those things you currently wear frequently and love.
To donate: items in decent condition — gently used.
To sell or consign: for those items that are in good condition but you know you haven’t used or worn in a year or two.
To throw out: those items that don’t qualify as “gently used”; stained, ripped, beyond repair, or long out of style.

Still need help deciding what to keep? A few questions to ask yourself: Do you love it? As tidying expert and bestselling author Marie Kondo might ask, does it “spark joy”? Do you wear it? Does it help you present the image you want to convey? If yes, it gets to stay and find a new home in your refreshed closet.

If the answer is maybe, then set it aside and see if you wear or use it in the next month, two months, six months. If you realize that you haven’t touched the piece in all that time, then it’s time to donate or sell it.

What are your closet storage needs?

Evaluate the best options available to meet your closet storage needs. It may be a closet organizer system — the most efficient and versatile way to keep your closet as organized and tidy as possible. Closet organizers often come with several shelves and a few clothing rods. It might also be possible to add a drawer set to your closet organizer later on or to add an entirely new section if you need it.

It’s possible that you might prefer open shelving, or maybe a collection of decorative bins and baskets. Once you evaluate your space, the choice should be clear. Keep in mind all that will be going back into your closet and how you’ll organize your items.

Organize all of your items – clothes, shoes, accessories
Organize all of the items that will be going back into the closet in a way that will work best for you. Consider the space you have and how to maximize every square inch of that space. Review the options for storage you have available for the space (high and low), and what will be the best way to keep you organized long-term.

It’s best to group your items. For instance, group your sweaters, your belts, your shoes, and so on. Decide how to store them best — i.e. in stacks, hanging, in drawers, etc. If you think you’ll benefit from a variety of storage options, then a closet organizer with a mix of drawers, shelves, and clothing rods might be exactly what you’re looking for. Thinking about the contents in groups will help you identify the space you need for each and how you’d like to see them organized.

TIP: Reserve those middle and front sections of your closet for the items you wear or use most often. Those things you use, but less often, get a place toward the top or the back, out of the way.
