“Many Dishes, Many Diseases, Many Medicines, Few Cures.” – Ben Franklin

Before we begin, let’s take a look at this famous quote from one of my favorite people – Benjamin Franklin. In essence, he was talking about the fact that even in his day, people ate far too much. There were too many options, too many courses, too many full plates – and all in all, just too much food.

From there, he noticed that those who overate often developed sicknesses more often than those who didn’t overeat. From there, the solution was to pay a visit to a doctor. Not too dissimilar from today, a doctor would write a prescription and the patient would take a pill or other remedy. And according to Benjamin Franklin, few of these diseases were ever cured.

So, where does that leave us?

Overeating Creates Disease

Back during the time of the Founding Fathers, they were able to recognize that overeating creates diseases. That hasn’t changed – in fact, it’s only gotten worse. This isn’t to say that eating organic, clean, and natural foods creates diseases, but being gluttonous and consuming more foods than our body actually needs is where the downfall lies.

But why?

Well, when we overeat, it causes a tremendous strain on our digestive system. And not only that, but it actually affects our bodies all the way down to the individual cell. On a cellular level, overeating causes our cells to become inflamed, and from there, our nervous system and immune system run amok. In fact, you can trace nearly every single symptom back to the cellular level.

What’s The Solution?

This is where things get a little bit complicated. Back in the day of Benjamin Franklin, their foods were much more natural and organic than the foods that we eat today. Today, our foods are filled with toxins, chemicals of all kinds, artificial additives, flavors, and ingredients, along with preservatives and antibiotics. So, not only do we eat too much today, but we eat too much food filled with too many chemicals that further harm our bodies and contribute to diseases.

So, why not just pay a visit to the doctor and take a prescription medication? Well, because medications don’t exactly treat the problem, they simply treat the symptom. They put bandages on symptoms to try and help patients live with whatever disease they have – they very rarely get rid of the disease itself.

Here’s My Suggestion

Quit eating! At this point, the solution should seem quite clear and apparent – it’s time to stop eating so much food! It might sound crazy, but I assure you, it’s not. In fact, it has science and research to back it up.

Have you ever heard of a concept called “intermittent fasting”? If you have, then you’re likely already familiar with its purpose and its many benefits. If you’re not, then I’ll walk you through it – but before I do, I just want you to know that I’ve recommended intermittent fasting for hundreds of my patients, and all of them have seen tremendous results.

Intermittent fasting is essentially an approach to eating where you’ll go periods of time without ingesting any type of food, only water. For instance, you can begin simply by implementing a routine in your daily life, like going 16 hours without eating foods and only drinking water. Once the 16-hour period is over, you can eat as your normally would. Essentially, condense all of your eating into an 8-hour window. Does 16 hours feel like too long to fast? Start with 10 or 12 hours and work yourself up to 16.

By giving your body a break of 16 hours between eating periods, you’re essentially giving your body enough time to really break down the foods that you’ve eaten, distribute nutrients and enzymes accordingly, digest properly, and recover effectively before your next meal. Not only that, but it even helps to repair your body at the cellular level.

For instance, our hormones get more sensitive at the cell level, you might lose weight, you’ll decrease inflammation, get rid of brain fog, and even improve mental clarity. And who would have thought that it all comes down to quality and quantity of eating?
