What Are a Truck’s Blind Spots?

Did you know that over half a million crashes involving trucks are reported every year? Truck accidents can be nastier than regular accidents because they involve larger vehicles. Injuries can be severe and car damage can be expensive to repair.

It’s for that reason that it’s recommended you give trucks a wide berth on the highway. That way, in the event of a sudden stop, you will have time to hit the breaks. In addition, you should be aware of a truck’s blind spots.

But, if you’ve never driven a truck before, how do you know where its blind spots are? Well, to help you out, we put together this guide. Read on to learn about blind spots in trucks and stay safe on the road!

What Is a Blind Spot?

A vehicle’s blind spot is the area surrounding the car that the driver can’t see. All vehicles have blind spots, not just trucks. In a standard car, you might notice you have a hard time seeing cars that are close behind you and to either side.

Because trucks are so big and they don’t have as many windows, their blind spots are much bigger. For instance, if you are directly behind a truck, they won’t be able to see you as they don’t have a rear windshield.

It’s important to be aware of these bigger blind spots when driving behind a large truck because if the driver can’t see you, they won’t be able to keep you safe. They might make sudden speed changes or turns that put you at risk.

Where Are a Truck’s Blind Spots?

Most trucks have four blind spots, one on every side.

A truck driver won’t be able to see you if you’re directly in front of the truck. It’s best to stay at least 20 feet in front of the truck to avoid getting hit.

Behind the truck, the driver has a blind spot of up to 100 feet! Depending on the size of the truck and the visibility the driver’s mirrors provide, they might not see you at all. This is the most dangerous blind spot, as you risk hitting the truck if they slam on the brakes or make a sudden turn.

On the left side of the truck, the driver can’t see you unless you are completely flush with the cab. So, avoid driving next to a truck when between the cab and the trailer for extended periods of time.

On the right side of the truck, the driver cannot see you at all. In some cases, this blind spot can extend for three whole lanes!

Navigating the Blind Spots

Now that you know where the blind spots are, it’s important to steer clear when you’re driving. This is both for your safety and the truck driver’s safety. Give a truck a wide berth and try not to hang around in the blind spots for long.

If you are in a truck accident, there are several steps to take and it can be both expensive and frustrating. So, make sure to be safe and aware at all times when driving around a truck.

Avoid Blind Spots Like a Pro

Now that you know where a truck’s blind spots are and how to avoid them, you’ll be able to drive safely. As long as you are aware and cautious, there’s no reason to worry!
