Professionals use different deep cleaning techniques, but the most common ones include:

Hot Water Extraction

Hot water extraction, also known as “steam cleaning,” is one of the most popular deep cleaning methods. A professional will use a machine to inject hot water at high pressure into the carpet fiber, thus breaking up any dirt and debris. The hot water extraction machine will then extract the dirty water and the loosened dirt and debris through a vacuum. It is this process that gives this method its name.

Hot water extraction is usually done in two steps—You start the first step by applying the cleaning agent to the carpet using a brush or a roller. Once the agent has been allowed to sit for a few minutes to break down any dirt and loosen it up, you move on to step two. The hot water extraction process is initiated in step two, and the dirty cleaning solution is removed from your carpet with a powerful vacuum cleaner.

Hot water extraction usually takes an hour, but it can take up to 2 hours for the carpet to dry completely. On the other hand, commercial carpets may take longer, and it is common to do the cleaning at the end of the day to allow for overnight drying of carpets.

Absorbent Compound

Absorbent compound cleaning is a dry cleaning method that uses an absorbent compound to remove dirt and debris from the carpet fiber. The compound is sprinkled over the entire surface of the carpet and then worked into the fibers with a brush or broom. Once it has been worked in, the compound is left to sit for a while to remove any dirt and debris from the carpet. A vacuum cleaner is then used to remove the compound and whatever debris it has absorbed from the carpet’s surface.

Absorbent compound cleaning can be a good choice if you want to avoid using water, as it is a dry method.

Bonnet Cleaning

Bonnet cleaning uses the Bonnet machine, which is a device that looks like a large floor buffer. The machine has a “bonnet”—a piece of cloth attached to an absorbent pad—placed on the machine’s spinning head. The machine is then run over the carpet’s surface, and the bonnet absorbs dirt, dust, and other debris from the fibers. The machine is then replaced with a clean bonnet, and the process is repeated until the entire surface of the carpet has been cleaned.

Bonnet cleaning is ideal for hotels or other commercial properties where high traffic and persistent use mean that carpets need to be cleaned frequently. However, bonnet cleaning only focuses on the carpet’s surface and does not remove any deep-seated dirt or debris. So, it’s ideal if you want to spruce up the surface of your carpet. You can also use professional rug cleaners.

Carpet Shampooing

Carpet shampooing is a process that uses a shampoo or detergent to clean the carpets. It is one of the oldest deep cleaning methods. A shampoo is gently worked into the carpet using a brush, giving it time to break down dirt and debris in the fibers. The dirty solution is then extracted from the carpet’s surface with a powerful vacuum cleaner.

While it’s beneficial for removing dirt and debris from the fibers, shampooing can damage the fibers if you use too much water. So, it’s best to avoid shampooing your carpets if possible.

Encapsulation

In encapsulation, you use an encapsulation compound—a  synthetic foam detergent that cleans the fibers. The compound is applied to the carpet’s surface and then worked into the fibers with a brush or broom. Once it has been worked in, the compound is left to sit for a while to encapsulate any dirt and debris from the carpet into powder. A vacuum cleaner is then used to remove the compound and whatever debris it has absorbed from the carpet’s surface.

Cleaning your carpets doesn’t have to be a daunting task—there are several methods that you can use. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to choose the one that will work best for your specific needs. If you’re looking for a way to clean your carpets without using any water, then absorbent compound cleaning is a good option. If you want to deep-clean your carpets and remove any dirt or debris hidden in the fibers, then carpet shampooing is the best choice. Regardless of which method you choose, it’s always a good idea to check that the cleaning process won’t damage your carpet first.
