What Are the Different Types of Dental Braces That Exist Today?

Did you know that more than 50% of American’s are unhappy with their smile?

Whether you’re a teen or adult, braces can help straighten misaligned teeth and perfect your smile. But did you know that not all braces are created equal? There are several types of dental braces for you to choose from.

Although your dentist will be able to educate you about the different types, they might not provide all the options and, therefore, not give you an accurate picture of what’s available. Instead, you should educate yourself on the four main types of braces before a dentist visit – that way, you’ll be in a better position to ask for the best option.

Read on to find out more.

Metal

Metal braces (‘train tracks’) are the most common braces for teeth straightening.

An orthodontist applies the braces to each tooth with glue. Then, they thread a wire through each one, connecting them all. The wire is preset to be the ‘perfect smile’ and will gradually pull each tooth into the correct position over 6-12 months.

Metal braces are relatively noticeable, but they’re the most popular option for teens.

Ceramic

Ceramic braces work in the same way as metal braces. However, they’re a more modern entry to the dental industry and have the benefit of being discreet.

These braces are made of tooth-colored material, so they’re less noticeable. However, they can be prone to staining because of their light color. You should avoid coffee and cigarettes if you have ceramic braces.

Lingual

Lingual braces are the most specialized straightening orthodontic treatment and can only be completed by the best orthodontist practices.

Lingual braces look similar to metal braces, but they have one major difference. These braces sit on the inside of the teeth rather than the outside. This means that they are entirely invisible.

If you don’t want people to know you’re having work done, lingual are the best dental braces to choose from – however, they also come with a higher price tag.

Clear

The final option is clear braces. Invisalign popularized the clear braces market in the early 2000s – now, hundreds of brands offer the same service.

Clear aligners are particularly popular. An aligner looks like a small, removable mouthguard. It’s easy to put in and out and is more discreet than other braces options. The main benefit is that you have the flexibility to wear it when you like.

Clear braces are more popular with adults, so you should find an orthodontist for adults if you’re thinking about an aligner.

The Types of Dental Braces Explained

That’s a brief guide to the different types of dental braces on the market today. If you’ve been thinking about fixing your smile, it’s best to understand your options before committing to the standard ‘train track’ braces.
