Well, there is a long-lasting debate about choosing the right species of fish for feeding dogs. Some say Tuna is very beneficial, while others say that it shouldn’t be included in the diet of your dog.

Sardines, Tuna, and Salmon, are among the most common species that make the best dog food. Tuna has been considered an edible diet food for dogs, but some theories don’t support tunas being included in the diet plan of dogs. How to know whether Tuna is harmful or not? Well, Tuna is extremely rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and selenium. All these important nutrients perform several body functions. 

Tuna also helps the human body perform many other complicated body functions, namely, acting on thiamine, which is very important as it breaks down the same to facilitate easy flow of thiamine into the blood vessels to act on the cells of the body. This action of thiamine happens because Tuna contains a very important enzyme known as thiaminase. Thiamine is Vitamin B1 which is very crucial for the human body. However, one should never overfeed the dogs with Tunas as they can hurt their health. Some problems that arise due to overfeeding Tunas are weakness in bones and muscles of the body, slower growth, and less appetite.

Dogs don’t face any major problem in digesting Tuna as they can be broken down easily into smaller pieces and absorbed by the blood vessels later on. There is no such digestion issue, but one should still feed Tunas is a limit and not more than that. 

What Are The Negative Effects Of Tuna On The Body Of Dogs?

Following are a few health issues that your dog may face because of eating Tunas: 

  • Risk Of Infection: There is a very high risk of infection inside your dog’s body because of Tunas. This infection can take place because Tunas contain some bacteria also which can hurt the health of your dog. The infections are no ordinary infections but serious ones that can lead to death.
  • Poison Due To Mercury: Tunas are fishes that eat other small fishes, and this is why mercury may get accumulated in their body. Tunas also can absorb mercury while in the water bodies. Mercury is present in water bodies due to the pollution that is there due to fossil fuels. Now, this mercury is extremely dangerous for their body and can spread poison also.
  • Other Health Problems: Tunas come in two types of packaging, namely, packing with water and oil. The ones packed with oil can lead to serious health problems like pancreatitis, liver problems, obesity, and other problems. Note that all these problems arise when dogs are fed with Tunas in higher quantities.

Nowadays, there are various dietary supplements available for dogs that are rich in various nutrients. Every dog owner should gain a bit of knowledge about the right balance given to dogs. One should also keep a balance of natural food supplements and synthetic food supplements for adequate nutrition.
