What Are the Most Common Skin Conditions That Get Diagnosed Today

Do you suffer from a skin condition that is having an impact on your life? Although this might feel like a difficult reality to live with, you should know that you are not alone.

In the United States, in fact, 1 in 4 people is reported to have some type of skin disease.

But what are the most common skin conditions affecting people these days? Find out more in our essential guide.

Acne

Among the most common skin diseases, the number one is definitely acne.

And while you might think that acne is a type of skin condition that only affects teenagers, you’d be surprised to hear that adults can be affected by it, too.

Hormonal changes, stress, and other environmental factors can determine the insurgence of acne. This happens when the hair follicles and oil glands of the skin get clogged, causing not only pimples and blackheads but cysts and nodules, too.

To treat acne, seeing a dermatologist is paramount. Leaving acne untreated, in fact, may even lead to permanent scarring and dark spots on the face.

Eczema

If you have young children, then there is a chance that you might be familiar with eczema. Atopic dermatitis (its medical name) is, in fact, one of the most common types of skin conditions to affect babies and children.

The exact cause of atopic dermatitis is not fully known, though it seems to be linked to genetics, the environment, and even the baby’s immune system.

Eczema can appear on several parts of the body including the face, hands, and feet, where skin will look dry, itchy, and red.

Contact your pediatrician to discuss the best treatment and seek more information about salve and other creams or ointments.

Shingles

Also known by its scientific term herpes zoster, shingles results from a virus that causes a red rash, often with blisters, mostly on the torso but potentially anywhere on the body.

Sometimes, people suffering from shingles will also develop a fever, headache, and overall body fatigue.

Because shingles are caused by the same type of virus responsible for causing chickenpox, the only way to prevent it is through a vaccine.

Hives

Another widespread skin condition is hives, which can be caused by several factors including food, insect bites or stings, and even certain medication.

In extreme circumstances, hives can affect a person’s breathing as well as cause swelling in several parts of the body. If that is the case, it’s vital to call 911 straight away.

Once a doctor has found the trigger of hives, it’s important to always steer clear from it, in order to prevent another episode.
