What Ingredients Should You Should Look For In Your Hair Products

In the days before the internet, we consumers were pretty ill-informed. At the mercy of whatever the advertising companies chose to tell us. It makes sense that for years companies could pack all sorts of ingredients into products that weren’t good for our bodies. Why did they do this? Money of course! It was cheaper and easier for them. That’s why for years our hair care products were stuffed with nasties like parabens, sulfates, and silicone. The dressed it all up with pretty prose and pictures and we believed them. Luckily now we’re wiser! Here’s a list of the best ingredients to look for.

Coconut Oil

Is there anything it can’t do? Coconut oil moisturises your scalp which will minimise dandruff. It also sinks deep into your hair to protect and strengthen it. Finally, and perhaps best, it smoothes and hydrates your hair to minimise frizz. Definitely a must-have!

Protein

Hair takes a lot of punishment every day. Hair dye, UV rays, and chlorine in a pool can all damage it. Your hair’s structure is made of protein just the same as your muscles. Protein helps repair any damage. The proteins you should look out for are panthenol, keratin, or wheat protein.

Argan Oil

This is one for all you color addicts out there! Argan oil is full of compounds that prevent your hair from drying out. It also reduces the damage caused by frequent dyeing. The most powerful substances Argan Oil contains are linoleic acid, oleic acid, and vitamin E.

Biotin

Biotin is a B-vitamin which is crucial for healthy hair and healthy nails. If you lack biotin you’ll notice your nails snapping more easily and your hair getting split ends or even falling out. Lot combat this look for shampoos and conditioners that are enriched with biotin.

Honey

Public safety warning – we mean in your hair products not straight from a jar onto your hair! When added to hair masks and leave-in conditioners honey does a wonderful job moisturising your hair. It contains vitamins,  minerals and antioxidants and will leave you hair feeling smooth and supple all day.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba (ho-ho-ba) oil is very close in composition to the oils that develop naturally in your hair. For this reason, it can help control the oils you produce and stop your hair becoming greasy. It can also help repair split ends and will leave your hair with a beautiful, natural shine.

Avocado Oil

Avocados are so good for our diet because they are full of good fats as well as lots of vitamins like A, D, and E. the good news is it’s also great for your hair. When applied to your scalp products containing avocado oil can promote improved hair growth and hair health.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is fantastic at retaining its moisture and it can help your hair do the same thing. Shampoos which are enriched by aloe leave your hair feeling moisturized and healthy. It can also help the ph balance of your scalp to keep it healthy too. If you suffer from dry hair or a dry scalp search for shampoos and conditioners with this magic ingredient.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is an astringent so use with caution if you’re trying it in pure form. In a shampoo however it can help to soothe dandruff, improve hair growth, strengthen your hair follicles and reduce hair loss.

That’s the end of the list. Hopefully, you now know what you’re looking for. It always pays to check the label when you’re buying a product that’s going to be used on your body. Remember advertising only exists to sell a product, they aren’t trying to help you find the right product. Do your research, check the labels, and bad hair days will be a thing of the past.
