What is Microblading?

Gone are the days of thin, barely-there eyebrows. Thick and prominent eyebrows are having a moment. However, if you fell victim to the over-plucked eyebrows trend of the 2000s, you probably find that you can’t get your eyebrows to grow back thick and full.

If this is the case, or if you have light hair and barely-there eyebrows, microblading might be a good choice for you. So what is microblading exactly? You’re in the right place to find out. Read on for more.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is essentially tattooing permanent makeup onto your eyebrows. To do this, a tool with tiny needles is used to create realistic-looking brow “hairs”. The tool makes a tiny line and deposits pigment that either matches your current brows or is a bit darker if you have blonde or very light brows.

While it is a form of tattooing, it’s not the same as getting, say, a tattoo on your arm or back. The needles do not go as deep, they are much smaller, and the pigment is different. Where tattoos are permanent, microblading is only semi-permanent, because eventually, your body will metabolize the pigment, making your brows lighter.

Benefits

The most obvious benefit of microblading is that it can give you brows if you don’t have any (due to overplucking, alopecia, or extremely light hair). It also means that you always have your brows “on”. Instead of having to fille them in every day, you wake up and go to bed with them, as they never wash off.

You can also change the shape of your brows to give you an arch or make them thicker if you think they are too thin. Basically, you can design your perfect brows with your brow artist.

What Should I Expect?

Your initial microblading session will begin with the brow artist planning out your brows. They will draw them out, make sure you like them, and then pick a color. The process may take a few hours and while it isn’t painless, it isn’t necessarily painful.

After your initial appointment, you’ll go back for a touch-up, usually within 4-6 weeks to make sure that everything is settling properly and to touch up any areas that need it. After, you can expect your new brows to last anywhere from one to two years. Most people will need a touchup after about 12 months, but other than that, you don’t have to do any work to your new brows.

Should I Get My Brows Microbladed?

Now that you can answer “what is microblading?”, it’s time to decide if it’s right for you. While it’s not inexpensive, it can increase your self-confidence, save you tons of time because you don’t have to fill in your brows, and save you time and money on waxing or threading.
