Where Can I Store My RV When I’m Not Using It?

There’s a reason why the RV industry contributes over $114 billion to the United States economy. More people than ever before are learning about the fantastic benefits that come with owning a recreational vehicle.

However, there is one question that many new RV owners don’t consider before purchasing their vehicle: where can I store my RV? Even if you think you know where you’re going to store your RV it’s still important to consider all of your options.

That way you protect your investment and get the longest lifespan out of it. So, let’s get started learning about the different storage options for recreational vehicles.

Where Can I Store My RV When It’s Not In Use?

There are three main options for storing your RV when it’s not in use: your home, an outdoor storage facility, and an indoor storage facility. There is no singular best option. Instead, the right option depends on the specific needs you have out of storage. So, to help you decide in this section we’ll go over some of the pros and cons of each.

      1. At Your Home

If you want the easiest option, then your best bet is likely to store your RV in your home. But, ultimately, this depends on the size of your home and RV. Ideally, you’ll have a covered area in the back of a large garage that can fit your RV.

The biggest plus with this option is that you don’t need to pay for storage. You also have access to your recreational vehicle whenever you want. However, this solution does come with some cons.

First, there’s the appearance factor. If you keep your RV stored in your driveway, then it’s not going to be an attractive sight for the neighbors. In some cases, it can even lower property values. That’s why many neighborhoods put restrictions on RV storage before you can move in through HOA rules. There’s also exposure to the elements.

If you aren’t storing your RV in your garage, then it’s exposed to rain, snow, and anything else that’s outside. This can make it fall apart much more quickly. You can fix this by creating a carport, or similar covering, however, this can be a costly solution. And, worst of all, it still doesn’t protect your vehicle from all of the outdoor threats.

That’s why a garage is nice for the cover it provides. But, even if you do have a large garage to store it in, it can be a major inconvenience for storage. As such, you should seriously consider your other options before choosing your home.

     2. At an Outdoor Storage Facility

If space is the main issue, but you don’t care about your RV being outdoors, then you should consider an outdoor storage facility. To keep your vehicle safe most storage facilities will offer twenty-four hours security services and high gates.

Many also offer additional amenities like dump stations, potable water, electricity, and winterization services. However, there are some cons you should consider. For one thing, think about the weather in your area.

If you live in a place with intense summers and harsh winters, then it can cause serious damage to your vehicle. Storms like hurricanes and tornadoes are other things that can destroy your RV.

Some people think that a carport or an RV cover is all they’ll need to protect their investment. However, you should make sure that you understand your vehicle’s insurance policy before committing to this. Many insurance adjusters will deny your claim if they find out that you didn’t store your RV in an indoor, enclosed facility.

     3. At an Indoor Storage Facility

An indoor storage facility combines the convenience and security of an outdoor facility, with the weather-proof nature of a garage. This makes it an ideal option for owners who are concerned about what the weather could do to their rigs when not in use.

However, even if the indoor storage facility seems perfect, it can still be a good idea to get an insurance provider to look at it. Making sure that it’s properly climate-controlled and secured will make it much easier to get a claim if you ever need one. The only con that comes with this option is the price.

Because it requires a more controlled environment, this is the most expensive solution. However, when you consider the peace of mind that comes knowing your RV is safe and sound, then it will probably be worth it in the long run.

How Do You Find the Best RV Storage Facilities?

The first thing you should make sure of when contacting a storage facility is to ask whether or not they accept RVs in the first place. Some businesses don’t have the space to cater to these types of vehicles.

You should also make sure that the storage facility has optimal security measures in place. After all, you don’t want your investment stolen from you.

If you want your RV enclosed in storage, then you should also make sure that the facilities are temperature controlled. That way, your vehicle stays pristine for as long as possible.
