Which Coffee Type Is the Most Beneficial for You?

Coffee is often considered to be a healthy drink when taken in moderation. It’s full of antioxidants that help prevent things like diabetes and liver disease. What makes coffee less healthy is the amount of milk and sugar that you add to it.

So, if you’re looking for which coffee type is the most beneficial, consider the amount of milk and sugar that goes in. Today, you’ll be able to find many different options at any coffee shop. With all the different types of coffee available, it can be hard to discern which is healthier

Here’s a quick guide to help you the next time you’re standing in line at your local cafe. Read on and learn which coffee is the best for you.

Black Coffee

As stated above, the amount of milk and sugar added to your coffee is what makes it less healthy. So, it’s no surprise that black coffee would be on the top of the list for the most beneficial. This is because black coffee is nothing but pure coffee and water.

With black coffee, you’re getting all the aspects of its nutritional value. This is all without any extra fat, cholesterol, or calories. A study from the USDA also shows that drinking black coffee can even help speed up weight loss.

Although, it’s important to remember to moderate how much black coffee your drink. Because of the high levels of caffeine and acid, drinking more than 3 cups every day can cause your stomach to be acidic. This can then lead to abdominal pain and cramps, so be sure not to drink too much.

Black coffee is often made with coffee beans that have a dark roast. Check out the benefits of dark roast coffee to know more.

Espresso/ Americano

Espresso or Americano (water-diluted espresso) are both like black coffee. The only big difference is that espresso is more ground finer than Americano and has more milligrams of caffeine per ounce. This is why most espressos get served as a single shot.

One ounce of espresso contains around 65 milligrams of caffeine. While coffee only has about 15 milligrams per ounce. This is why people tend to drink coffee more than espressos, but the nutritional value stays the same.

Macchiato

While it is the healthiest type, not everyone enjoys the bitter taste that you get from plain coffee. Luckily, other coffee types can still be beneficial (although not as much as black or espresso). Macchiato is an excellent second pick for those looking to drink better-tasting options.

A macchiato is an espresso with foamed milk added on top. Since this type of coffee uses a lower amount of milk, it comes as a close second to black coffee or espresso. You still get the same nutrients, with just little extra calories.

Of course, the number of calories added can vary depending on the milk you use. Ranging from around 13 to 18 calories, with healthier milk, meaning more beneficial coffee.

Cappuccino

Going down the list, cappuccino comes in fourth as it has more milk than a macchiato, but less than flat white coffee. It often consists of equal amounts of milk, espresso, and foamed milk.

Again, it contains more milk, which adds to the calorie content. However, you can improve this by using plant-based milk like soy milk. This is to ensure you keep the levels of fat and cholesterol down.

If you’re not a fan of the first few options on the list, cappuccino is the coffee for you. With only a third of it being espresso, you aren’t hit with a strong bitter taste. It’s still among the healthier options, though.

Flat White Coffee

Flat white coffee contains one-third espresso and two-thirds steamed milk. It’s a cappuccino without the foam, meaning that more milk gets added in

For 220 millimeters, which is usually the smallest size, you get around 120 calories if you use whole milk. 120 calories are more than the previous options mentioned. It’s nothing compared to the number of calories you get from other more sugary coffee types, though.

Mocha

Drinks containing a lot of sugar aren’t always good for you. However, if you have a sweet-tooth, it can be hard to stick to the options given above. A mocha is one-third espresso, two-thirds steamed milk, plus a shot of chocolate syrup.

This drink contains significantly more sugar than the others listed but still tries to stay on the healthier side. Not everyone is a fan of plain old coffee and milk. If you want a sweeter flavor to your drink without it being too unhealthy, mocha is the way to go.

Irish Coffee

Last on the list is Irish coffee. It’s always been up in the air regarding how healthy it is because of its contents. Irish coffee consists of coffee, milk, sugar, and whiskey.

Small amounts of alcohol every once in a while can bring plenty of health benefits. Like coffee, it helps lower the risk of diabetes as well as heart disease and some forms of cancer. If you’re a fan of the taste, the alcohol and low milk content can still make for a healthy drink.

The unique combo can even help prevent things like heart and liver disease. This is important to keep in mind if you’re looking for solutions to these problems. A simple cup of Irish coffee a day can help you live a better life away from these diseases.
