Early Life

St Michael the Archangel is one of the most well-known and well-loved of the archangels. He is most often associated with protection and is the patron saint of police officers, soldiers, and paramedics. St Michael is also known as the prince of the heavenly host and the defender of the faith.

Born in Palestine in the first century AD, St Michael was a devout Jew who was raised in a family of wealth and privilege. Early on, he showed a deep interest in religious matters and was often found in prayer and contemplation. As a young man, St Michael had a vision of the Archangel Gabriel, who told him that he would one day be an archangel himself.

At the age of 30, St Michael electromagnetically appeared in the presence of Emperor Constantine during the persecution of Christians. In this appearance, he is said to have destroyed the Emperor’s army. Constantine was so impressed by this event that he stopped the persecution of Christians and ordered that they be given the freedom to worship.

His name means “who is like God.” This a testament to him who strived to follow God’s teachings, as he is also known for his compassion and mercy.

In the Bible

St Michael the Archangel is one of the most well-known and well-loved saints in the Catholic Church. He is known as the protector and defender of God’s people and is often associated with defeating evil and destroying the enemy. In the Bible, St Michael is mentioned in the book of Daniel and the book of Revelation.

In the Book of Daniel, in the New Testament as the protector of Jesus and his followers, and in the Book of Revelation as the leader of God’s army in the final battle against Satan and his minions. Hence, he is called the “Prince of Angels.” St Michael is a powerful intercessor and a wonderful example of courage and strength.

Archangel Michael Protects and Intercedes

He is often depicted holding a sword and wearing armor. This is because he is known as the protector and intercessor of God’s people. In fact, Archangel Michael is the patron saint of protection, among other things.

He also intercedes on behalf of humankind. He stands between God and us, pleading our case and interceding for us. When we utter a St Michael prayer, we are asking him to intercede for us with God. We believe that he has the power to do so and that he will intervene for us if we ask him.

Famous Appearances

St Michael has appeared many times throughout history and continues to do so even in the modern day. Some of his most notable appearances include the Battle of Lepanto and, more recently, the Protection of the Church.

This is while some famous miracles are also attributed to him. This includes appearing to Joan of Arc and helping her win her battles. Another miracle is his appearance to Pope Gregory VII during a time of crisis.

But it does not stop there. In 1859, he appeared to Pope Pius IX, and in 1917 he appeared to the three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. In 2001, Michael also appeared to Cardinal Renato Martino, the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

More recently, in 2017, St Michael appeared to a police officer in Florida, USA. The officer was working on a case involving a missing child. As he was about to give up hope, St Michael appeared to him and led him to the child. The child was safely returned to her family.

And another recent case was in 2018 when St Michael appeared to a doctor in Mexico. The doctor was about to give up hope on finding a cure for cancer. St Michael appeared to him and showed him the cure. The doctor was able to save many lives with this new cure.

He is indeed a powerful intercessor and defender of the Faith, as he continues to fight for us even in these modern times.

Feast Day and Modern-day Relevance

St Michael’s feast day is celebrated on September 29th, and he is also honored on the feast of the Archangel Raphael—September 24th, and on All Saints’ Day—November 1st. In the modern day, many people still invoke St Michael’s help, especially when they are going through a difficult time.

Specifically, a prayer to St Michael invokes protection, especially against the powers of darkness. Some also choose to wear Archangel Michael pendants as a sign of their devotion. Others also pray to St Michael when they are in need of strength or courage.
