Ocular pain can be extremely debilitating ruining your quality of life.

If you’re wondering “why do my eyes hurt?”, then this article is for you. Learn what the possible causes are so you can get ahead of the problem.

Why Do My Eyes Hurt?

Pain in the eye is called ophthalmalgia. This medical term broadly covers any pain caused by an object in your eye, dryness, or a medical condition.

Because of the complex nature of your eyeball, pain in the eyes can be because of several different things. Here are the most common causes:

Conjunctivitis

Highly contagious, conjunctivitis is also known as “pink eye”. Pink eye is a painful infection where the conjunctiva is swollen and reddish.

In severe cases, the eyes produce pus and feel as though they are burning.

Sty

A sty is one of the most painful eye conditions, it’s a bacterial infection on either lid of your eye. These commonly occur if you have dirty hands and rub your eyes constantly.

Styes look like big zits on your eye. The pain usually occurs when you touch it, but can also irritate you when blinking.

Warm hot compresses or antibiotics are the quickest way to treat these. Do not try and lance the sty yourself.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the most common eye disorders that causes discomfort. It’s a condition that is defined by pressure on the optic nerve.

Without medical intervention, blindness is the prognosis for many elderly.

Corneal Ulcer

Do you have an open sore on your cornea? If so, you have a corneal ulcer. It sounds painful, and it is painful.

Some of the symptoms you might experience include tearing, redness, pus, and blurred vision.

While infections are the likely cause, antibiotics should clear it up soon. If you’re taking other eye medication for different reasons, consult your local eye specialist.

Blepharitis

It’s important to keep your skin clean and clear; because if you don’t, then oil glands in your eyelids may clog and give you blepharitis. Similar to styes, blepharitis causes redness, irritation, and itching.

Eyestrain

In a world dominated by screens, eyestrain is becoming more common. Between computers, smartphones, and video games, everyone is spending more time straining to see small print or videos.

Side effects can include aches, dry eyes, and tearing.

Remember to take frequent breaks from screens, and get your eyes regularly checked by the ophthalmologist.
