Why Oral Hygiene Is Important

Self-care is essential to ensure that your body remains healthy and functional. That is a subject of utmost importance and should always be on top of your priority list because it affects every aspect of your life. Poor health can lead to lesser productivity, which means lesser chances for career opportunities and advancement. When your wellness levels are not kept at optimum, your personal life can also suffer due to reduced quality time with your social network, which in turn can cause you to spiral into depression.

There are many aspects of self-care, and the most commonly ignored part is oral hygiene. The mouth is the first part of your digestive tract, and without it, digestion cannot occur effectively. Maintaining a healthy mouth is important in keeping your entire body healthy. Experts at Mandurah Dentist recommends a visit to a health professional regularly. With regular consultation with a dentist, you can get healthcare advice on oral hygiene, and issues can also be identified and treated a lot sooner.

Oral infections are a common cause of rheumatic heart disease. Your mouth is home to natural bacteria that is necessary for digesting food. When bacteria levels grow too high, they can begin to cause problems such as tonsillitis and tooth problems. Bacteria from these types of infections can enter the blood circulation and reach the heart and brain tissues. The sensitive tissues lining the inner walls of your heart are especially susceptible. When the bacterial gets there, they cause rheumatic heart disease, which can be fatal in the very young and aged population.

In your central nervous system, the most susceptible part is your meninges. These are also soft tissues that line your brain, separating it from the walls of your skull. An infection of the meninges can be triggered by infections occurring in other parts of the body, including the oral cavity. When the meninges inflame in a condition known as meningitis, it can slowly increase intracranial pressure. This can result in serious brain injury, which can cause disabilities and, in severe cases, even death.

Now that you know that there are other serious diseases that can stem from a simple oral infection, the next thing you should do is prevent it. The solution is actually much simpler and much easier than most people think. By doing oral care and keeping a good sense of oral hygiene daily, 97% of mouth infections are being prevented.
