Why You Should Do a People Search Before Hiring

Hiring is challenging in even the best markets. You can sort through all of the resumes you receive and carefully conduct interviews, but that doesn’t guarantee that a qualified candidate will be a good fit. In fact, some of the best candidates might have secrets or unsavory backgrounds that could put your company at risk. Here are a few reasons why you should check the backgrounds of potential employees before hiring them.

Screening reduces company liability.

Before you offer a job to any qualified candidate, make sure you conduct a people search on their history. This can protect your company from both the actions of the new hire and from a liability lawsuit brought on by another employee.

For example, failing to run a background check could mean you hire someone with a history of violence. If that employee assaults a coworker, the victim could potentially hold you liable for not creating a safe work environment.

Many background checks are also easy to conduct. Simply submitting their first name, last name, and phone number can get you the results you want.

People change over time.

You might think you are safe hiring an old friend or an old classmate, but do you really know their history? Even hiring a family member can be risky if you don’t really know them.

People change as they grow. If you drifted away from a college roommate for a few years, you don’t really know what they have been up to unless you check for yourself. Your friend may be taking advantage of you by hiding their history because they think you will trust them.

Background checks and research into your candidates should be a standard part of the hiring process. Failing to research one person while checking on another isn’t equitable and could potentially be seen as discriminatory. Make sure that everyone gets the same fair checks, even if they are close friends.

Credit checks can protect your finances.

In some cases, you may want to look into the credit reports of your qualified candidates. While not every employee needs their credit run, it’s a standard practice in some financial sectors to do so.

There are multiple reasons for this. First, if an employee has poor personal finances, how can you trust them to make sound financial decisions with yours? This is particularly relevant if the candidate is setting a budget or providing financial advice.

Next, an employee with poor finances could potentially commit fraud to fix their own financial issues or could be likely to fall for online attacks that promise cash fast. Even outside of the finance department, they may be more likely to click on phishing links and other spam emails in order to relieve their financial woes.

Consider taking advantage of the Fair Credit Reporting Act to screen your employees.

People spend more waking hours at work than at home.

Tenant screening is standard for landlords before they accept a new renter. Even small-scale landlords will run a quick background check using the name and the phone number of the applicant. This reduces the chance that the renter will default on their monthly payments or potentially damage the property.

However, most people spend the majority of their waking hours at work. This means that they are more likely to get into trouble in the workplace rather than at home. Your employees will likely spend 40 or more hours each week on your property or handling your assets. Why wouldn’t you check on them first?

Screening potential team members is an essential step if you want to protect your company and your employees. A security service can protect your building from outside threats, but background checks can keep your company safe from internal ones.
