A first assessment for 2020 in terms of upcoming technological innovations

As we approach the end of this 2020, the time has come to take stock of what we have seen in terms of videogames and more generally for the entertainment industry. It was certainly a special moment where, however, the digital gaming circuit, like the streaming platforms, recorded excellent performances, largely due to the numerous releases that followed one another over this important season. A new decade has begun and with it important releases were planned, more or less respected or postponed, which however did not clearly affect the data concerning the interactive game circuit.

In terms of technology, 2020 had already started with news, first in the form of rumors and subsequently confirmed by the manufacturer, namely Sony, which concerned the release of the new Playstation 5 console. A news capable of shaking the whole sector dedicated to the videogame sector, as Microsoft was also preparing for its response in real time: Xbox Series X, a new generation of consoles in open competition with the latest releases from Nintendo. Virtually much of the market that affects consoles was evolving and moving. Still to remain in technology territory, Apple was also preparing for the latest release by the new iPhone model, now in its 12th version, while the Chinese company of Vivo was among the competitors. In short, the conditions for witnessing a real battle to the sound of latest generation digital technology were all there.

To make the period even more exciting also for streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video and Infinity, 2020 saw the presentation on the European market by Disney Plus, which also means having the expanded universe of Star on your side. Wars, the George Lucas brand, without forgetting the Marvel Universe. In practice, a catalog aimed at old dreamers and new generation of Disney. However, during this first part of the year, it was Jeff Bezos’ company, Amazon which, with its Prime and Prime Video services, made an important leap in quality and a leap in terms of profits and enter.

Significant growth figures were recorded during the first half of 2020 for the online gaming sector. In fact, we think of the success that gaming rooms such as online casino games where play online slots have achieved, which have recently been able to invest in technological innovation, transferring the critical mass of users from PCs and laptops to more agile devices suitable for today’s times such as smartphones, latest generation tablets and convertible computers. This is how the digital gaming and videogame sector managed to obtain constantly growing data compared to recent years, where a decline was more than desirable. The same type of logic that seems to have rewarded the important investments of Sony, Prime Video and above all of Netflix, which has supported important projects and works such as The Irishman by Martin Scorsese and new films in production for the next two years.

Faced with a sector in sharp loss, streaming platforms such as Netflix today represent a valid alternative to today’s cinematic offer, not to mention how together with Infinity and Prime Video they have revolutionized the concept of TV and television series. Think, for example, of the unprecedented success of a cult series like Stranger Things, but also of other products that have been enhanced and brought to an increasingly vast and heterogeneous audience such as Better Call Saul, Black Mirror or La casa di carta, just for give some concrete examples.
