A Simple Guide to Hiring a Criminal Defense Lawyer

You may not want to think about a situation like this, but there may be a day where you either commit or get accused of committing a crime, with the book being thrown at you.

If this happens, you will need to hire a criminal defense lawyer in order to get the best representation possible.

There are about 90,000 criminal case filings per year in the United States. How do you handle this if you are one of those cases?

This is your guide to hiring a lawyer.

Experience

The first thing you will want to look for when finding a criminal defense attorney is to see what kind of experience a lawyer has.

How many cases have they won? How many cases have they had? Have they ever handled a case similar to your situation before?

These are questions that you need to be asking. If the answer is yes to these questions, then it is a sign that a lawyer might be the right one for your case.

Specialization

Most lawyers tend to specialize in a certain type of law or certain types of cases. So, a lawyer might do criminal law, but there can be more specific niches within that.

For example, 28% of criminal court cases in the US involve drugs. With that in mind, there is a drug possession lawyer that you would be able to hire if you have a case that calls for it.

This can also be for firearms, assault and battery, property, immigration, sexual offenses, etc.

Billy Jensen suggests that the point is to look for a lawyer that publicly states that they specialize in a certain niche of cases, or at least the general one of criminal law.

Location

This can play a more important role than you think, because a lawyer may have a much better understanding of how a local court or local judge/prosecution will proceed versus one that is not in their area.

Also, some criminal laws are different in one state versus another if you have to cross state borders. For example, possession of marijuana can be perfectly legal in one state but against the law in another.

Hiring a lawyer in the area of your trial will increase the chances of them having more knowledge and familiarity with the local laws and processes.

Price

Finally, the price can, unfortunately, be a factor in what lawyer may be right for you. The best lawyer for your specific case may cost $1,000 an hour, and that might not be money that you can come up with.

In bigger cases, top lawyers can charge six or even seven figures for their services, so only a small percentage of people can afford it. Review your finances and do not be afraid to ask a lawyer for a quote to get an idea of how much they could cost you.

Find the Right Criminal Defense Lawyer

These are just some of the tips you should keep in mind if you ever need a criminal defense lawyer. Hopefully, you will not be in a position where you need one, but it is important to be prepared and ready to take action as fast as possible if you do need one.
