Male Grooming Tips: How to Define Your Own Beard Style

There’s nothing quite like growing a beard. It’s a great way to establish your style and look good doing it.

At 17 feet, six inches, Hans Langseth’s beard still holds the record for the world’s longest. Nobody is expecting you to grow such a monster, though. Even if you’ve always had a close shave, it’s never too late to start growing a beard.

Beard style is a very personal choice, and everyone has a different idea of what they want to look like. Keep reading to find out how to define your beard style, and love it.

Face Shape

Let’s talk about face shape for a moment. There are seven basic face shapes. If you don’t already know your shape, there are some simple guides to help you find out.

Basically, though, when figuring out which beard style you’d like to go for, it’s essential to know what your face shape is. Not all beards look good on all faces.

Besides the shape of your face, you should also consider the size of your eyes, mouth, and nose. You may find that some beards don’t quite fit your style.

Beard Style

Male grooming has come a long way in the last few decades. As a result, you have many more choices than your grandfather or even your father had.

At the same time, beard shaping has become something of an art form recently, and it’s getting a little complicated to get the look you really want. A trip to your local barber shop is the easiest way to get what you want.

Round Face

Styles that suit a round face tend to elongate your facial hair growth, making your face look slimmer. The Van Dyke, The Balbo, and the Short Boxed Beard all fit this face shape well.

Square Face

Circular beards suit this type of face and go a long way to emphasizing your strong jawline. The key here is to trim regularly, so you keep the style looking crisp and clean.

The classic Goatee is also suitable for this face shape. If you’re looking for something low maintenance, this may be the style for you.

Oval Face

The most versatile of face shapes, almost any beard style is going to look good on your face. You can really have your pick of styles.

Some of the more popular choices for an oval face include the Chevron (covering just the upper lip) and a stubble beard.

Rectangular Face

Use your beard to highlight the sturdiness of your face and your bold features. You can get away with a pure mutton-chop style as well as chin-heavy styles like the Chin Strap.

Get the Right Beard

You should now have an overview of the right beard style for you. Matching your face shape to your ideal beard is reasonably simple, and it will help you to communicate what you want when you visit your barber.
