Reddy weddings are unique and beautiful. Not only are the décor schemes grand and the food yummy, but the rituals and customs are also special and authentic. Rituals Leading To Holy Matrimony

The finalising of the wedding date and time is called Nischithardham, which is decided by the family priest. The groom’s family then gives the bride gifts like jewellery, clothes or silverware as a blessing. This is followed by the Haldipaspu, commonly known as the haldi ceremony. The bride and groom have this ceremony at their respective homes.

Early in the morning, on the day of the wedding, is the Mangala Snanam. The bride and groom are rubbed with aromatic oils and given a bath. The ritual is full of excitement and fun as the family members pour water over the bride or groom’s head.

A few hours before the wedding, a ritual called Snathakam is held, where the priest ties a silver thread across the groom’s body. But the custom that stands out for its light-hearted and dramatic vibe is the Kashi Yatra. This is when the groom pretends to renounce worldly pleasures and head to Kasi, to live his life as a Brahman. Drama ensues when the bride’s father stops him and tells him about the life of a grihasta (married man). He then offers his daughter’s hand in marriage and brings him back to the mandap.

Rituals On The D-Day

The main wedding rituals begin with the Kanyadaan, where the bride is carried to the mandap by her uncles, in a bamboo basket. After a few rituals, the bride changes into a red and white combination saree. She comes back to the mandap with ten ladies or Sumangali. Six of them carry rice on a plate and turmeric powder mixed into it, while the other four carry small lamps made of rice flour, sugar and milk. The lamps are a sign of a bright future and the rice is a sign of abundance. The groom then ties the Mangalsootram around the bride’s neck and leads her for the seven rounds around the holy fire.

While you surely know that a groom slips on a ring on the bride’s finger on the D-Day, have you heard of putting rings on her toes? That is what this final Reddy matrimony custom is – Sthaalipaakam. The groom puts toe rings on the bride. He also gifts a string of black beads for attracting positivity.

Ritual Post-Wedding

Grihapravesham is the post-wedding ritual when the bride is welcomed into her new house by her mother-in-law. She gently tips the rice-filled vessel over with her right leg at the doorstep before walking in and ringing in prosperity for the household.
