Family Nutrition: What to Know About the Foods You Eat

Proper nutrition is important during every stage of a person’s life, but growing children definitely need more nourishment than adults. With the popularity of fast food and processed snacks, both kids and parents are not getting the nutrition they need in today’s world. Eating well isn’t as difficult as you think it is when you just apply some common sense and start good habits early. Here are some tips for improving the way your family eats.

1. Incorporate Protein

Protein is one of the most important nutrients a growing child needs. It is the building block of life because it is responsible for creating muscles and rebuilding cells in the body. Athletes often need more protein because they have to maintain proper muscle health. To get more protein in your diet, try to incorporate lean meats, legumes, and nuts into your family’s diet. Three servings of lean meats a day are required to meet your daily protein requirements.

2. Don’t Eliminate Fat

Fat gets a bad reputation because it’s associated with being overweight and heart disease. Although some types of fat should be eliminated from your diet, good fats need to find a place in your daily life. Without enough fat, the body would not be able to function properly. Fat deficiencies lead to hair loss, dry skin, and stunted growth. Good sources of fat include avocados, olive oil, salmon and almonds.

3. Iron

Iron is a very important nutrient that carries oxygen to the blood. Red meat is a fantastic source of iron and B vitamins, but the consumption of it should be limited to once a week. Chicken and turkey are also rich in this nutrient. Vegetarians can obtain their iron from substitute meat products, beans, lentils, and spinach. Taking vitamin C will help the body absorb iron easily. Often runners will find their iron-depleted when racing frequently. Be sure to find foods rich in iron to support their activities and overall health.

4. Getting Kids to Eat Veggies

Everyone knows the importance of vegetables, but getting children to eat them is another obstacle in your family’s health. Nonetheless, there are ways you can get your kids to eat more veggies. Hiding vegetables in your children’s favorite cooked dishes is a great way to get them to eat more of them, and fresh veggie juice is also a good option.

5. Vitamins

Vitamins are crucial for the human body. Vitamin A, C, D, E, and K are important to get. You can find most of these vitamins in fruits and vegetables. To get your fair share of nourishment, it is important to eat a variety of different foods.
