How to Measure For Pencil Pleat Curtains?

Width of panels

It is necessary to measure the width and drape of the panels in order to make them appear just right. Usually both the length & the length is kept twice or thrice the measurements for proper fullness while installing or hanging them on the rod.

To measure the width, start from left to right. According to a thumb rule, measure 5 to 6 inches outside the window track from both sides & multiply the obtained width with 2.5 or 3 to achieve a proper fullness. For instance, if your window is 35 inches wide, you should multiply it by 2.5 or 3 & add 10 to 12 inches more to it. Such as 35 X 3 + 12 inches. This will be the width for a single panel, in case you are buying fabric for 2 custom made curtains, it’ll require about 35 X 6 + 24 inches fabric in total which will look full and nice giving depth to your window.

Drape of panels

To measure the length or drape, start from the height you want the panels to hang from. Usually, they are hung 8 to 10 inches above the window track. And if you have spacious rooms and large windows you can hang them high from the ceiling (2 to 3 cm below the ceiling).

For the overall drape, end the length anywhere from the sill where you want. You can choose below the window sill length (5 to 6 inches below the window sill) or to the floor (either 1 to 2 cm above it or 3 to 4 cm extra fabric to puddle on). Whatever you choose, it’s your personal preference and style sense. Note that length can be readjusting by changing the position of the heading position on the rod.

How to hang Pencil Pleat Curtains?

Unfold the panels & spread them on a table or bed. Divide the total width into two & add 6 cm to it. Locate the strings on one end and tie all of them tightly creating a bow. Now start gathering the fabric towards the tied end to create pleats.

Once you have gathered all the fabric, adjust the width & loosely tie the knot & measure to ensure if it is according to the width of our window. If not, readjust it & tie the chords tightly.

Spread the folds evenly throughout the curtain, and insert hooks in the desired pocket. Insert them at 3 or 4 inches away from each other.
