How to Clean Your Coffee Grinder?

Having a good coffee grinder is a blessing since it helps you prepare the most flavorful coffee day after day. All you need is to buy quality coffee beans, and the coffee grinder takes care of the rest.

You simply need to adjust the settings according to the texture you require, and the grinder takes care of the rest. Moreover, it saves you from buying pre-ground coffee beans, which aren’t as rich and aromatic as the real deal.

To keep your coffee grinder working properly, you need to take care of a few things, and it also involves cleaning your coffee grinder regularly. However, this needs to be done carefully, especially if you have an electronic model. This guide shows you how you can clean your coffee grinder easily.

How Often Should You Clean a Coffee Grinder?

If you use the coffee grinder daily, you should clean it once every week. Otherwise, the oils inside the beans start producing a foul smell that might also find its way into your coffee cup. Even if you use it less frequently, make sure to give it a thorough cleaning once every two weeks.

How to Clean a Blade Grinder?

If you have a blade grinder, the cleaning process might differ a bit. Here are the steps you can follow:

  • Get Grinder Cleaning Tablets

You can easily find grinder cleaning tablets online and throw them into the hopper. If you don’t have tablets, you can use 1/4th cup of rice in place of it. Make sure to check the label of the cleaning tablets to find out the quantity you need to put in.

  • Turn the Grinder On

Turn on the grinder and stop when you notice a fine powder inside the hopper. When the blade stops spinning, unplug the grinder from the wall socket.

  • Empty the Grinder Contents

Open the hopper and empty the powdered tablets or rice into a trash can. Tap the sides of the grinder to make sure none of the powder is left inside the hopper.

  • Wipe the Grinder

Once emptied the hopper, clean it thoroughly with a dry microfiber towel. Make sure to clean around the blades since there might be some residual power there. Once you are sure you have gotten everything, dampen the microfiber towel and wipe the exterior of the grinder to remove any dust or grime from it.

How to Clean a Burr Coffee Grinder?

Burr grinders are a bit more complex to clean than blade grinders. Whether you have a hand grinder or a large-sized one, you will have to take it apart before cleaning.

  • Remove and Clean the Hopper

The cleaning begins with removing the hopper from the grinder. Wash it with warm water and soap, and also clean its lid and its sealing gasket, so that you can remove any oils released by coffee beans. Once you have rinsed it properly, dry with a microfiber cloth.

  • Turn on the Grinder

While the hopper is left to dry, turn on the grinder and turn it off after a few seconds. This would cause any coffee beans stuck in the chamber to become ground or dislodged. Unplug the grinder when you turn it off.

  • Wash All Removable Components

The next step involves taking apart the burr grinder and washing any removable components other than electrical components. You can wash them with hot water and soap and rinse them before drying them with a microfiber towel. You can also leave the components to air dry before putting them together.

  • Remove and Clean the Burr

Now is the time to clean the burr. Remove the burr from the grinder, and remove any stuck coffee grounds or beans with a stiff brush. You can’t use soap and water on the burrs, as it might cause them to start rusting. Use a dry microfiber towel to remove any remaining beans or oil on the burrs.

  • Put the Grinder Back Together

Once you have cleaned every component in the method mentioned above and everything is completely dry, you can put them all back together. If you have any trouble disassembling and reassembling the burr grinder, you can refer to the user manual for help.

That’s all we have for you on how to clean your coffee grinder. By following the aforementioned guidelines, you would be able to keep your grinder in top shape, whichever type you own. The cleaning might differ according to the brand and model you own, so you can look for a guide on how to clean it.

You can implement other ways to make the most out of it, i.e., regular cleaning, using quality coffee beans, and protecting it against moisture. Having a clean and properly functioning coffee grinder is your key to having flavorful coffee every day – just the way you like it.
