How to Make a Hidden Litter Box – Useful Ways for You to Follow

  • Find a larger substitute:

By “finding a larger substitute,” we mean you can make a litter box out of a wine box, a plastic container, or create one from scratch.

Hidden litter box made from wine case

To make a hidden litter box from a wine box or a plastic container, you will need:

  • A wine box/plastic container big enough for your cat to fit in (can be either lidded or unlidded)
  • A marker
  • Cutting tools (knife, jigsaw, etc.)

Use the marker to draw the opening on the side of the container or top of the lid, then use your cutting tool to cut along that line. Remember to sand the cutting edges so they don’t cut your cat.

That’s it! Now you have a unique litter box for your feline friend that doesn’t look like a litter box at all.

Now, if you are a DIY enthusiast and loves doing things from scratch, then you can make a hidden litter box using:

  • 6 MDF boards
  • Nails
  • Glue
  • Trim pieces and paint of your choice (optional)

Cut an opening on one piece of MDF board. Then, with glue and nails, but all the panels together like you would a box. You can use trim pieces and paint to make your DIY litter box furniture more charming.

This hidden litter box is wonderful because you get to do all the measurements, so it will definitely fit your cat. Plus, it looks just like a normal wooden box on the outside.

  • Side table and mini curtains

For this hidden litter box idea, you will only need:

  • A side table that is tall and big enough to put the litter box under,
  • 3-4 pieces of cloth
  • A tension rod
  • A sewing kit

Cut the pieces of cloth to size so that they can keep the legs of the side table covered. You can keep some extra width for hemming and pleats.

Use one cloth as the mini curtain, aka the opening. Fold over (½-1 inch) and stitch about ¼ inch from the edge (where you will stick to the side table) to make the pocket for the tension rod. Then attach the mini curtain on the side table.

Finally, use hot glue to stick the remaining pieces of cloth onto the inside of the table. Now you have a side table with a lovely table cloth; no one will know it’s a hidden litter box.

  • Wooden litter box cover:

This litter box furniture is the perfect hideaway for your cat when he/she needs some alone time to go potty:

  • Plywood sheets (1/2″ thick)
  • Wood screws or nails (1½ inch long)
  • Sandpaper
  • Other DIY tools: ruler, pencil, drill, etc.

First of all, take the measurements of your litter box (width, length) to make sure the cover panels will fit over the litter box. You will need to saw the plywood sheets into 3-4 panels. Don’t forget to sand all the cutting edges as well as the surface of the wood sheets.

Then, be creative and paint, draw, decorate the wood panels. Finish off by using wood glue to attach the panels together. Wait for it so dry completely, then screw in the nails/wood screws to fix the panels in place more firmly.

There you have it, your own wooden litter box cover. It’s suitable for a small place because the top can be used as a side table as well.

  • Under the sink:

If your bathroom has a vanity, then you can save some space by hiding the litter box inside the vanity under the sink.

As for the opening, you can follow one of our recommendations

  • cut an opening on the vanity side,
  • add a cat door to the vanity door, or take off the vanity door and replace it with a curtain/piece of cloth.

  • Other furniture: bench, cabinet, drawer, etc.

A bench modified into a litter box furniture

This is the most popular way to make a hidden litter box. You can modify pretty much any kind of drawers, cabinets, and dressers in your house, even small benches into a litter box container.

For this kind of hidden litter box, you will have to find a litter box that can fit inside your choice of furniture (drawer, dresser, etc.).

The best choice would be a cabinet without any drawers or a bench box, as you only need to place your cat’s litter box inside and modify a cat door so that he/she can go in and out easily.

But what if you only have an old drawer or dresser? Simply remove the insides, then follow the steps above. Keep the fronts of the drawer, attach them on a new wooden panel then hinge it on to make a new door or the drawer. This way, you can disguise your litter box furniture into a normal dresser/drawer.

A small tip for the cat door: the traditional way is to make one on the side of the cabinet/bench/drawer. However, recently, many people have opted for an opening on the top of the furniture as it will prevent the litter from falling outside of the litter box.

Final words

Those were our top picks of how to make a hidden litter box. Hopefully you can find the most suitable option for you and your feline friend. A litter box furniture is perfect for apartments with small space. You can also customize it so whether it will stand out won’t be a problem.
