IID Medical Exemptions

Ignition interlock devices are very effective devices to prevent you from driving under the influence of alcohol. Ignition interlock devices require you to blow air into the device for it to detect if you are drunk. If you are convicted of a DUI charge, you may be required to use an IID. In special cases, you can obtain an exemption. Let’s dive into ignition interlock device medical exemptions. 

• Own A Vehicle

• Medical Condition

Another thing that allows you to qualify for a medical exemption is if you have a medical condition that may not allow you to breathe with sufficient strength to activate your ignition interlock device. 

• Medical Documents

For you to register for an ignition interlock device medical exemption, you must provide original medical documents from your healthcare provider that supports your claim that you cannot breathe with sufficient strength to activate your ignition interlock device. In most states, this document must come from a state-licensed medical provider to confirm that their client has a medical condition that impedes them from operating their device. 

• Form

To apply for a medical exemption from using the ignition interlock device, you must complete and submit a medical exemption form to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This form must be completed by both you and your healthcare provider. 

• Temporary Exemption

It is very important to note that if your medical condition is temporary, then a temporary exemption from using the ignition interlock device may also be issued. If no specific date is given, then the temporary exemption will only last 6 months. If it exceeds this 6 months, you must provide a signed statement from your primary health care provider who completed the request form explaining your continued need for the exemption. 

Note: Rather than submitting a signed statement from your primary health care provider, you may also submit a new application and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will determine if you qualify for another exemption through the details provided in your first application. 

• Explanation

Attached to the medical exemption form will be an explanation provided by your primary healthcare provider. This explanation must state why they believe you have a medical condition that prevents you from operating your ignition interlock device. Specialized treatment for the medical condition must also be provided if there is any. 

• Aftermath Of Your Exemption

For your exemption to be valid, the exemption letter given to you by the Department of Motor Vehicles must be approved by a court. After the approval, you must always carry your ignition interlock device medical exemption letter every time you drive. 

Aside from medical exemptions, there are two other major reasons why you may be exempted from using an ignition interlock device which are hardship and work-related issues. If for any reason you qualify for any of these exemptions, remember to not drink and drive to keep you and other road users safe.
