Internet access on Everest base camp trek

Trekking means getting closure with nature and escaping the busy lifestyle and work. But during the trekking you might want to be in touch with your family and friends or the workplace so you might be curious about the internet service in the Khumbu region. In this 21st century almost every region of Nepal has sound internet service no matter how remote the region is, you will be connected to the web. Trekking in the base camp of the world’s highest mountain without posting pictures in social media increases the excitement in the trek. Even the mountaineers document their journey to the peak by posting pictures, live streaming videos and tweeting.

The Internet has an advantage in a possible dangerous area for safety. You can make SOS calls, map routing, emergency medical calls, location beacons with the cellphone and 3G connection in the Everest region. Having good internet access means you can be connected with the people if you need any kind of help. Similarly, you can also share your progress and achievement with your family and friends.

Types of Internet Access Available

1.   Mobile connectivity

Mobile connectivity is the most common and easiest way of connecting the web by using your cell phone. Since 2010, the Everest Base Camp Trek has 3G connection. There are mainly two largely operating telecommunication companies in Nepal, NTC and Ncell.  NTC or Namaste is a government-owned telecommunication company that is one of the largest corporations in Nepal. This telecommunication company provides internet and network in every corner of Nepal. Ncell is a private company which has a large number of customers in the market. The company provides good network coverage and fast internet services. In Namche Bazaar both companies have their telecommunication tower. However, you can’t expect the networks to be as good as in city areas. For Everest Base Camp Trek many trekkers prefer Ncell because it works more faster than NTC above Lukla. If you want to network for most of the time, get both sim cards as they are very cheap.

2.   WiFi connectivity

In Everest Base Camp trek, most of the tea houses and lodges will provide WiFi services of a company named Everest Link. This is the company which provides internet service in every part of Everest region like Gokyo lake trek, Everest Gokyo Lake Trek etc. However, you need to pay for the use of WiFi. The price of WiFi depends on the locations and Tea houses. Higher you go, the price of WiFi increases. The charge of the Wifi might be $5 or more an hour. The WiFi isn’t super fast in the region. But it is enough to upload pictures on social media. For a fast WiFi connection you can go to Starbucks in Lukla, Everest Bakery in Namche Bazaar and Everest View Hotel in Syangboche. Using WiFi could be troubling as you won’t get an internet connection at every point of the trails. You can get

Therefore, for the easy access and cheaper price of internet connection we recommend you to use Mobile connection of NTC or Ncell. Depending only on Wifi for internet connection isn’t a good idea in Everest Base Camp. You can use the internet packages in both NTC and Ncell for cheaper internet access.
