Marketing is essential for business. This is a fact. Marketing is critical to the revenue of a business which means it directly impacts the ability of a company to function and grow. Therefore, companies must invest in marketing. Yet, marketing is more than just the promotion of the business and its products. Marketing also includes the strategic research and planning that directs a company’s marketing. Marketing is the collection of information, ideas and goals used to guide and direct the actions a business takes to communicate and connect with consumers.

Understand the Consumer

Before a company can market to the consumer, it must understand the consumer. This requires intentional research and data analysis. This will occur differently depending on whether a business is a startup or an established one. For a startup, the research and data will be sourced from other companies in the industry. An established business will have more direct data to collect from their customer data platform if they have invested in this type of software; they can also consider past sales in relation to previous marketing campaigns and any additional methods they utilize to collect data to inform their marketing strategies.

Have a Clear Goal

This research is critical to marketing because the information that a company gathers will help guide a company on messaging to the consumer and direct how to best communicate that message. This messaging will be able to be made clearer in response to the consumer research which will allow the company to have a more focused goal. Having a clear goal and remaining focused on it is vital for a business. Haphazard, misguided and uninformed decisions can be detrimental in business. A clear goal allows a business to assess its decisions against the desired outcome and adjust its decision-making based on its usefulness towards achieving the goal. This is true for marketing decisions as well.

Create a Thoughtful Website

This clear messaging created from the gathered research must be implemented in all aspects of the business, but nowhere is this more important than on the website. The website is where customers and prospective customers may first be introduced to a company and, thus, it is necessary that a business ensure that the website is built with the consumer in mind. The website must be constructed in a way that clearly supports the goal of the business and meets the needs and wants of the customer that was gleaned from the research. Communicating and connecting with the customers is an essential element of marketing, so the website is a critical piece of the marketing strategy and should be invested in as such.

Utilize Free Tools

These same principles should be applied to free digital tools for marketing as well. Social media platforms offer companies the opportunity to connect and engage with consumers directly on different platforms. Although the platform is owned by a different entity, the business should maintain its focus on its goal and make its decisions based on the goal and the information gained from the research. Social media and any other free digital tool should not dictate how the company markets on the platform; the company must continue to let its strategic marketing plan be the driving force behind the choices that are made.

Stay the Course

It is important that once a company discovers the marketing actions that work that they are continued. There should not be changes made to marketing simply for the sake of change. Making an informed decision that supports the company’s goals means that past successes are considered as well. A company that has found successful marketing strategies should stay the course.

Marketing plays a vital role in a company’s health. Therefore, the quality of the marketing and the success of the marketing is of critical importance. This is why marketing must be purposeful and based on information that has been thoughtfully collected, critically analyzed and intentionally applied. A company that understands the critical role of marketing has greater potential for success and longevity.
