Looking for the Best Inverter for Home? Keep These 3 Points in Mind

Now that the summer season is here, we will see the temperatures rising across the length and breadth of the country. This in turn will lead to a meteoric rise in power consumption across households as people would be using heavy load  electrical appliances  such as air conditioners and air coolers to keep their homes cool. And as we can tell from our past experience, this increase in demand for energy often leads to frequent and long power cuts.

The only way to deal with these power cuts is to bring home an inverter that provides you sufficient power back-up. So, if you too have been thinking about buying a home inverter, here are a few important points to help you find the best inverter for your home.

1. VA Rating

VA Rating is a measure of the amount of voltage and current an inverter delivers. Here’s the formula for calculating VA Rating.

VA Rating = Total Power Requirement/Power Factor

**Note – Power factor ranges between 0.65 to 0.8. For convenience of calculation we are assuming power factor as 0.7 in this case.

To calculate the total power requirement we need to add  up the power requirement of each and every appliance that we would require during a power cut.

So let’s say if a household requires the following electrical appliances during a power cut

4 Fans (70 Watts each) = 4*70 = 280 Watts

3 Tube lights (40 Watts each) = 3*40 = 120 Watts

8 LED lights (9 Watts each) = 8*9 = 72 Watts

1 television (120 Watts each) = 1*120 = 120 Watts

1 refrigerator (300 Watts each) = 1*300 = 300 Watts

If we sum this up, the total power requirement would come out to 892 Watts.

VA Rating = Power requirement (power consumed by equipment in watts) / Power factor = 892/0.7 = 1274 VA

Considering there may be an increase in peak load in the future, it is advisable to go with an inverter with a higher VA Rating of 1500 VA in this case.

2. Inverter Technology

Another important thing to keep in mind when looking for an inverter is the inverter technology. There are two main types of inverter technologies –  Sine Wave and Square Wave.

To understand the two technologies and how they differ from each other, we first need to understand what an inverter does. Well, the primary function of an inverter is to convert DC (Direct Current) to AC (Alternating Current). The two technologies differ in terms of their efficiency. For example, the efficiency of Sine Wave Inverters in terms of converting DC into AC is much higher as compared to Square Wave Inverters. Another advantage of choosing a sine wave inverter over a square wave inverter is that unlike Square wave inverters that get heated up and produce a humming noise, the sine wave inverters operate much smoother.

You can refer to this table for a better understanding.

Feature Sine Wave inverter Square Wave inverter
Appliances it runs Laptops, personal computers, refrigerators and ovens Motors
Noise Issue Normal. Same as one produced when powered by the local grid Creates a humming noise in inverter and appliances
Appliance Safety High Less
Price Slightly Expensive Budget friendly

3. Choosing between a 12 and 24 volt UPS

Inverters are rated in VA and Volt .

In the above scenario we already calculated the VA Rating as 851 VA. And we finally decided to go for an inverter with a VA Rating of 900 VA.

Now let’s say we need to choose between two inverters

  1. 1500 VA and 12V
  2. 1500 VA and 24V

Note – The VA Rating of both the inverters is the same, that is 1500 VA.

The advantage of using 24 volt inverter is that is uses 2 batteries of 12 volt each which helps in  providing longer back up time ideal for area with long power cut while a 12 volt inverter uses only single battery which is ideal for area with short power cut & also wants to run heavy load appliances.  Advantage of 12 volt inverter that it saves the cost of one additional battery

Note – The same is applicable when you have to choose between a 1500VA & 12V inverter and a 1500 VA & 24V inverter.
