The year 2020 has been rough not just for the people from the US, but for everyone else around the world as well.
After so much social distancing, we all simply crave being close to each other once again more than ever. We all want to have some good old-fashioned fun at last.
It feels like we didn’t have it for centuries, and instead, we were swimming in the deep ocean of worry and fear.
Maybe we are not yet ready for clubs or pubs, given the precautions in place for our safety, but a Game Night with a close circle of friends or open-minded family (as the game has a Cards-Against Humanity style of humour)might feel like a relief and can charge us up with some dose of positivity.
Here comes the solution
After checking some of the new board games launched this year on Amazon.com, I found a real gem amongst them all. This gem is called “Fame or Shame”.
Some crazy things are going on with this game, make sure to read until the end.
We will start with the attention-grabbing box which elicited a listing click from us.
Here, there are red theatre curtains in the background with a variety of people who cannot possibly be in the same place, yet, we see them gathered around a movie-strip-like boardgame.
Some of the crazy things
A Homo-erectus is holding a primitive hammer, a chubby police officer stands with a doughnut and coffee in both of his hands with an extremely tight uniform on. There is an alien creepingly staring at you from the corner of the box, and right across it, a priest is giving a prelection to a sinful-looking girl in a very short skirt kneeling and praying before him. There is also what looks like an Italian mafia, accompanied by a stereotypical cute blond girl by his side.
A Zeus-looking god-like character seems to be aimed at with a shotgun in the hands of an old humpbacked lady, possibly fed up by his ‘mysterious almighty ways.
All of that seems to be controlled by a mysterious film director from his chair. He is the only character we cannot see here.
The Amazon title is: “Fame or Shame Board Game – Become a Film Director or an Actor and Get Paid in Millions.”
My brain kind of exploded and well, obviously I had to click to check WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?
I started to look over the pictures and the second one asks:
“Are you ready to be a Film Director and make your friends and family play in your short movie? What would you make them do and say if you were capable of creating WHATEVER YOU WANT TO, and then watch them play it in front of you?”
That captured my imagination and ideas started to flow. Ha!
Another picture wrote: “Become a Director for your turn, roll the dice, pick an Action card and be in charge of creating a scenario connecting each actor’s role with the action card you’ve picked by a crazy story.”
Action: Summon a Spirit.
Roles: Evil- gangsta stepmother, perv specialized in physical street harassment and grandfather about to get a stroke.
I mean… Whaaat?
I just imagined my best friends in those roles summoning a spirit and I laughed to myself in front of my laptop for quite a while and gave one of them a phone call.
The next picture says: Once the scene is over, the director chooses the best performing actor who will be rewarded with all the role money cards that each player has pulled and played in this scene. The director earns his action money card by creating a short movie and choosing the best actor.
I realized that the cards are also money, but not just any amount of money.
They are MILLIONS!
A single card starts from $1 Million and goes up to $10 Million!
The above action is worth $8 M and the roles: $4 M, $2 M and another $2 M!
What a great feeling!
Moving forward, another example presents an action worth $9M– “Basement” and the role of Ninja Monkis valued at $3M, Football Coach is valued at$4M and Stable Boy is worth $5M.
The closing information: “The next player clockwise, rolls the dice and starts their director’s journey. The game is over when the first token reaches the END with the final reward of $30 Million (my comment: Whoah!). Now, all the players count their money. Whoever collects the most, wins! It’s that simple! ”
As if that’s not already exciting enough, reading the box one finds that there are:
- 167 Action Cards!
- 213 Roles!
- 20 Mysterious Bonus cards.
- 8 tokens and 1 dice.
- All the above are stored in gold bars-like bags!
- And instruction.
The product description reads:
“You’ll have an opportunity through the game board indications to record some of the performances since their creation until you play and post them on your social media! Plus you’ll be paid $15.000.000!”
There’s a real bank in here too!
Aside from role-playing and scenario creations, on the board game itself, you can find extra indications.
From going to jail for cocaine abuse, through the explosion of the studio because you’ve hired a cheap pyrotechnic manager, to creating scenes with two actions! You will get paid double, but your mind has to expand to a maximum! You’ll have a medical condition chosen by another player which will affect your next acting performance or you’ll get fired and lose the highest paid role.
The game is obviously for ages 17+, as indicated in the listing. It is also definitely for people who do not easily get offended. The game also has some dark and sarcastic humour to it.
On the Fame or Shame’s Amazon page, you can find a video tutorial, which explains how to play the game, in a very simple way.
I went ahead, bought it and my game night became something more as if I now have a purpose in life! (Joke!)
Recollecting the events of the game, in just one night, I made millions of dollars. I became an actor, a film director, and I had Tourette’s syndrome for a moment (chosen by Sam- my friend – as the indication said, so no offence to anyone). I was a virgin, homeless beggar, personal voice assistant, sexy alien femme-fatale, Baywatch, gravedigger and more.
My friends played other roles and we were creating scenarios for hours since replayability is insane! You can mix them all, infinitely many times and there’ll always be something new.
As a conclusion, aside for the hours of laughing and extra answer gained – a simple board game made us realize how we all live in an abundant world, and how many weird but amazing personalities and identities there are, though we are forced to cooperate.
Also, how amazing our world could be, if we would cooperate better.
The role-play has put us into other people’s shoes, creating not only fun but also pushed us to understand them from within. Once we finished the game, we spent an extra few hours discussing our realizations with a couple of drinks.
I left “Fame or Shame” a well-deserved 5-star rating and from now, I will definitely have a new favourite board game!
