One possibility to record the HRV morning measurement is with the help of heart rate variability mobile App for iOS. To start measuring, reading and monitoring HRV, please make sure that you have a Welltory App on your iPhone.
What is heart rate variability? Especially for morning.
The HRV monitor morning measurement should be carried out as soon as possible after waking up.Do not start the measurement until you are at rest and your heart rate is close to your resting heart rate. It is important that you are completely calm and relaxed during the measurement. Don’t move and try to think of nothing, if possible. It is better if you take the readings while you are still half asleep than completely fresh and thinking about the tasks for the day ahead. Use the morning measurement as an opportunity to start the day relaxed. We would suggest you to use Welltory website for more detail on how to check your heart rate on iPhone.
In the event of malfunctions, you should pause the measurement and only continue it after you have regained calm. This applies to an urge to cough or the like. After starting to measure the readings, the measurement time and the current heart rate are displayed. After about a minute, the current RMSSD (Root Mean Sum of Squared Differences) is displayed within the ring. This HRV parameter is a scientifically proven indicator of parasympathetic activation. The more relaxed and fitter you are, the higher it is.
For a reliable calculation of all HRV parameters, Welltory App needs a measurement time of approx. 5 to 10 minutes.
As soon as the HRV parameters have been calculated in sufficient quality, the app recognizes this and ends the measurement process automatically.
Save the measurement
At the end of the reading procedure, you will be asked to save it. After saving, the measurement appears with the date, time, pulse and RMSSD on the screen. If you have connected the app to your Welltoryaccount and there is an internet connection, the measurement is automatically transferred to the Welltory server and can be further analyzed in the web interface.
HRV measurement on the wrist
Welltory App does not support HRV measurement from the wrist! We emphasize the importance to the quality and informative value of the data, which is why the RR intervals must be recorded with high accuracy in order to determine the HRV parameters. Such an accuracy is currently only possible by measuring with an EKG-compatible chest strap (e.g., Polar H7, Polar H9, Polar H10 or Garmin HRV-Tri).
Some of the Garmin watches suitable for HRV readings and measurement allow heart rate measurement on the wrist. This option is sufficiently accurate for recording during training, but not for determining HRV parameters.
If you take the HRV morning measurement with one of these watches, you have to make sure that the measurement is not made via the wrist, but via the chest strap.
What must be considered to monitor the morning HRV?
When creating morning measurements, there are various criteria that must be adhered to or fulfilled so that the measurement is correctly recognized:
- Use the Welltory App or a supported Garmin/Polar watch
- The chest strap must be able to record HRV data, not a wrist measurement
- Duration of the recording 5 to 10 minutes
Device for recording
When recording, you can use the Welltory App or your Garmin / Polar watch, provided it is listed here for the supported devices.
Before the first reading / measurement, create an indoor sports profile that records heart rate data. You can then also use this profile for your measurements. Alternatively, the Cardo profile can also be used.
Possibly, the recording interval must be changed from “Intelligent” to “Every second”. You can find it on your Garmin watch under “Settings> System> Data recording”.
Older Garmin watches
For older Garmin watches, an RR activation file must be transferred.
The chest strap plays an important role! In order for the measurement to work and to be of high-quality, the chest strap must be able to record HRV data. Usually the manufacturer of the belt will know whether the belt can do this or not.
Examples: Polar H10, Polar H9, Polar H7 or the Garmin HRV-Tri or HRV-Pro.
Measurement with the app
If you create your recording profile with the Welltory App, your chest strap must also be Bluetooth-enabled.
Examples: Polar H10, Polar H9, Polar H7 or Garmin HRV-Pro.
Measurement over wrist
A chest strap is required. The measurement on the wrist is not supported by Welltory App.
Duration of the recording
If you use theWelltory App, the App will automatically stop recording as soon as enough data is available. If you use your watch to record, the measurement should take between 5 and 10 minutes. 5 minutes is the minimum, it can also go over 10 minutes.
