Do you love road trips? It’s a big world out there. There are many routes to choose from especially if you believe that the journey is sometimes more important than the destination. Here then, are some of the world’s most beautiful driving roads.

Highway One, USA

This highway is aptly named as it charted high among America’s most scenic roads. This popular highway stretches almost the entire, lovely length of the California coastline. Drive from just south of L.A. to Mendocino County.

It’s arguably the most scenic span in the entire Monterey area. Driving south from the city of Monterey, this highway takes you through the popular seaside spot Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the stunning coastline of Big Sur, complete with breathtaking Bixby Creek Bridge, towering redwoods, and massive cliffs.

Atlantic Road, Norway

The Atlantic Road in Norway is less than six miles long. It connects the villages of Kårvåg and Vevang by way of an attractive archipelago and a group of bridges. Often included among the world’s best road trips, this road is not for the fainthearted.

It dramatically twists and turns through one of the country’s most often stormy seas and crosses the stunning Storseisundet Bridge. This curved, architectural wonder is the highest of the eight bridges on the road. Veteran visitors say that when seen from specific angles, it looks as if the road drops off into the sea.

Ruta 40, Argentina

Ruta 40 is 3,195 miles long. It’s the country’s longest highway, spanning almost the entire length of Argentina. Flanked on the west by the famous Andes Mountains, Ruta 40 stretches from Cabo Virgenes in the south to Ciénaga in the north. Along the way, drivers pass through the plains of Patagonia, lovely lakes, and busy cities before peaking in Abra del Acay almost 5,000 meters above sea level. It’s a scenic showcase of Argentina’s landscape Argentina and like America’s Route 66 this route is also the subject of both song and story.

Milford Road, New Zealand

The Milford Road begins in the lovely lakeside village of Te Anau to South Island’s magnificent Milford Sound. In between these two special spots this scenic drive passes through the Southern Alps. While the drive can be completed in approximately two hours, it’s a good idea to plan on a longer trip in order to stop and see such sights as the Mirror Lakes which reflects the incredible Cleddau River and Earl Mountains.

Karakoram Highway, Pakistan, and China

This incredible journey begins in Pakistan north of the city of Islamabad. It ends a good 800 miles in the Xinjiang region of China in the city of Kashgar. Constructed over a period of two decades, this is one of the world’s highest paved roads with an official elevation peaking at nearly 4,700 meters.

This highway goes through some of the most breathtaking, rugged terrain in the world. Most notably, it runs through the great, glacial Karakoram Mountains along the ancient Silk Road route into China.
