Over the last five years, over 15 million new drivers entered the roads, the highest number since the 1970s.

If you’re ready to start cruising the roads too, it’s essential to take driving lessons and practice proper driver safety. But for many new drivers, the first driving lesson can trigger some anxiety, and you may worry that you’re not yet prepared to get behind the wheel.

Use these three tips to help you prepare for your driving lessons so you can start driving with confidence in no time.

  1. Get in the Driver’s Seat

Before starting your driving lessons, get a head start on learning about the inside of your vehicle.

The experience of sitting in the driver’s seat can be quite different from when you’re in the passenger seat. Get used to getting behind the wheel, but keep the engine off for now.

Pretend you’re preparing to drive by holding the steering wheel and putting your foot on the brake pedal. And just like an actual driver, get used to checking and adjusting your mirrors and seat.

If you’ll be taking manual driving lessons, also take time to get familiar with the clutch and stick and how to properly use them.

  1. Use Online Resources

Whether you’ll be spending time in the classroom for your driving lessons or not, there are plenty of written resources and practice tests that can help you prepare to start driving.

Look online for study guides, e-books, and other learning materials that correspond to your local laws. Even if you haven’t started driving with an instructor yet, you can visualize using the techniques and rules you read about.

You can also observe what you study when in the passenger’s seat. Next time your parent or friend is driving you around, watch how they stop at stop signs, use their turn signal, or check their mirrors when in reverse.

After studying online resources, you can then try taking an online learners test to gauge how much you’ve learned and any areas that need improvement.

  1. Choose the Right Driving Lessons

The last step to prepare for your first driving lesson is to actually schedule your first driving lesson.

But you shouldn’t just schedule the first lesson package or teacher you find. Instead, make sure you’re choosing driving lessons that fit your needs, schedule, and local laws.

At a minimum, be sure to take driving lessons that will fulfill your state or country’s requirements for getting your driver’s license. But you can also choose from private driving lessons, driving lessons for adults, and other types of lessons to find an option that suits you.

Go Into Your First Driving Lesson With Confidence

Learning to drive can be scary, and driving lessons can be nerve-racking. But with these three tips, you can start your first driving lesson with confidence.

Remember, a little preparation can go a long way in helping you feel ready to get behind the wheel. And be sure to choose the right lessons for you so you can feel comfortable when learning how to drive.
