Top Bathroom Designs for 2022

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the home. It’s a practical space as well as one for relaxing the mind and body and getting away from the stresses of modern living. Our bathrooms are also top of the list of renovation projects – not only because of changing trends but because the bathroom is one of the main focal points for prospective buyers, and can add significant value to your home.

Projects can vary in size from full-on refits to small changes (which can have a surprisingly big impact). Whether you’re going all out and changing everything or just want to inject a new lease of life into your existing bathroom, it’s all about being on trend, so here are some of the top bathroom designs for 2022.

Going green

Let’s face it, most modern bathrooms you encounter have white (or a shade of) as the color in the design. But green will be trending in 2022 – not bright lime green, but rich, forest greens, earthy sage and elegant emerald. Combining these shades – whether you use tiles, paint, wallpaper, or furniture – with plants and a classic, freestanding tub gives the bathroom a supersensuous feel. If you have a compact bathroom and feel that it might get claustrophobic with a stronger color, consider a feature wall as an alternative, or use green tiling as an accent.

Tonal colors

Staying on the topic of color schemes, in 2022 the use of different tones is set to be on-trend. Rather than choose radically different colors for different elements, using different tones of the same base color creates a depth to the space which can make a large bathroom feel more enveloping, but can also make a compact one seem more spacious. As well as green shades, rich blues can be layered extremely effectively and are offset nicely by traditional porcelain plumbed items.

Bathtubs

The centerpiece of any bathroom, the tub is a big opportunity to make a statement. Free-standing tubs have been enormously popular, especially with rounded, organic style designs. Next year sees a twist for tubs – earthy, minimalist materials are coming into fashion. Think of a modern stone tub rather than porcelain, with either natural tones or something more daring like granite or even concrete. For smaller bathrooms, the ofuro – or Japanese soaking tub – has been on trend for a while now, and shows no sign of becoming a less popular option. The ofuro is shorter, but deeper, than a regular bathtub, giving you all the immersion in a more compact space.

Plants

Having plants around the home gives physical and mental wellbeing a boost, and the bathroom is a great place for a bit of greenery. Potted ferns look great amongst the fixtures and fittings, although if you have pets you may want to check the toxicity of each species. A great idea for a home spa experience is to use fragrant plants to give a natural aromatherapy session – place eucalyptus, lemongrass, basil, or lavender around the space and then have a hot shower – the steam reacts with the plants and gives the mind and body relaxation and rejuvenation.

Japandi

2022 is the year of design fusion, and for the bathroom, nothing works better than Japandi – the combination of Japanese elegance and Scandinavian minimalism. This hybrid concept makes use of natural materials – wood, stone, slate – and sleek lines. Neutral color schemes with off whites such as champagne coupled with granite grey give a rustic but urban feel, and the use of tonality within the scheme provides depth without compromising the balanced aesthetic.

Wet room

Doing away with traditional divisions in the bathroom will remain on-trend next year – wet rooms feel more luxurious than shower stalls, and getting rid of the shower curtain gives the entire space a flowing feel as well as providing a home spa experience. Couple this with multi-directional shower heads, with one large one mounted on the ceiling, and you’ll have a shower you’ll never want to get out of. What’s more, the bath, sink and shower can all be included in the same space, making floor planning less of a headache and cleaning less of a chore.

Fluffy towels

It’s a small change, but getting rid of your old, rough, worn-out towels and replacing them with fluffy, luxurious ones makes a difference not only to your bathroom experience but also to your overall aesthetic. If you’ve opted for a minimalistic bathroom and want to inject a splash of color (without committing to a feature wall), towels are the way to go. Open storage, either wall mounted or under the sink keeps them on display, or for even more comfort opt for a heated towel rail.

Changes big and small can make all the difference to your bathroom. And you’ll feel the difference every time you step in for a quick shower or a well earned soak in the tub.
