Hemp has been in existence for a very long time, but in the past couple of years, many research and tests have shifted people’s perception regarding the consumption of hemp. What was earlier considered a recreational drug has now become a natural way of getting rid of many ailments. And if you are looking forward to making the most of this growing trend of hemp consumption by growing hemp, you have come to the right place.

When it comes to growing hemp, there is always a boundary that you can never cross, especially if you live in the UK. Using the wrong process, producing more than the recommended amount, and many other practices can make the practice of growing hemp completely illegal.

At which stage hemp becomes cannabis?

Before you start analyzing whether it is legal to grow hemp in the UK or not, you should first understand at which stage the hemp will convert into cannabis.

Hep is a type of cannabis product that contains less than 0.3% of THC. This means that only those products with less than 0.3% of THC are considered legal and can be sold, consumed, and shipped legally.

2It is the percentage of THC that differentiates hemp from cannabis. But in addition to this, there is one more factor that you must consider, and that is cannabinoids. CBD is present in cannabis and hemp plants, but CBD contains more THC than CBD, while hemp contains more CBD than THC.

Getting a license for growing hemp

One of the first things you will need to grow hemp legally is a license from the Home Office. For getting the license, you have to visit the Home Office Drugs Licensing website’s official website and then fill out the online application form, which is also known as MD 29.

In this form, you have to provide field location numbers, a map of the farm, details of the hectare and THC content, seed type, and confirmation of whether the EU has approved the seeds you are using or not.

How much does it cost to get the license?

The price you will pay for the license depends on whether you are registering for growing hemp for the first or just renewing your old license. If you register for growing hemp for the first time, it will cost you around £580, and if you are renewing your old license, it will cost you £326.

Which conditions do you need to fulfill for growing hemp?

Now, you must have understood whether it is legal to grow hemp in the UK or not, but in addition to this, you must fulfill all the conditions required for growing hemp legally in the UK. For example, it is necessary to ensure that you are not growing hemp in sensitive areas like schools or public places.
