How Can You Tell a Mouse from a Rat?

I will be showing you different ways in which a rat is differentiated from a mouse by comparing its characteristics. Continue reading below.

1. Differences in sizes

A house mouse, which is called Mus Musculus, has a length between two to four inches. This length is contrary to the length of the larger Norway rat. A typical Norway rat measures between seven to nine inches in length. If both rat and mouse to be compared are adults, you can be able to easily identify one from the other. However, you can find it difficult to differentiate one from another in a situation whereby the mouse is fully grown up and the rat is younger. This is because a younger rat can be of the same size as a fully-grown mouse.

2. Appearance

While both rats and mice appear similar in their body color, there are still somebody features you can look out for to differentiate them. First, let’s take a comparison of their snouts. Taking a look very well, a mouse has a more triangular nose and a rat has a blunter nose. In other words, a mouse’s nose is shorter while rat’s own is longer.

In terms of their ears, mice have large ears, but a rat’s ear is larger. Also, the mouse has a long, thin tail with air covering it, while the rat’s tail is rather scaly than hairy.

3. Behavior

While rats and mice are categorized as rodents, each has unique characteristics in behavior that differentiate it from the other. Despite being smaller, mice are more courageous than rats. Mice are enthusiastic and eager to explore new things and places in search of food and shelter, even to the extent of going into traps; they possess violent passion.

On the other hand, baited traps are most likely not enough to trap rats. This is because rats are generally cautious animals. It takes rats much longer time to explore new things and you will notice fearful disposing of as rats crawl in a shyish manner only very glued to the corner of walls or any shielding material.

In terms of creating a spot for an abode in your house, mice are creative and can climb heights without difficulties. Hence, they can easily nest around the roof of your house. Due to their small size and flexible body, mice can squeeze their sizes into tiny holes which makes them get to places in your home where you may never expect anything of their size.

Though rats possess the ability to climb, in their nature, they prefer lower-level structures. So you will most likely find rats in the basement or crawl places.

4. Damage

The reality is that any of the two rodents are destructive to your home. In either case, you will need the service of a professional exterminator to get rid of rodent infestation be it rats or mice.

Rats and mice can eat structures in your home; they can eat open wire cables and fabrics, causing current bridges in electronics and causing fire outbreaks.

Nice have weaker teeth and they won’t be able to eat food that is securely tight up in containers. However, to prevent rats from eating your food, more food security measures must be employed. Rats are known to possess stronger teeth than mice, which enables them to be able to eat aluminum, wood, glass, sheet metal, and cinder blocks.

Can Rodents Cause Health Problems?

Yes! Apart from damaging home structures, rodents like rats and mice have been researched to transmit bacteria and some agents of diseases. Hence, if you notice rats or mice in your house do not hesitate to hire the service of professional exterminators to help you get rid of them in your home.
