Quick poll: do you clean your drains when you decide to go on a cleaning spree? Most people don’t. Plumbing emergencies have a weird habit of evading our attention- water doesn’t strike us as a naturally harmful substance. That doesn’t mean it can’t wreak havoc in your house. Your plumbing system, if left unexamined for a long time, can buckle and create some peculiarly nasty problems for you to deal with. Wanna steer clear of that puddle? Here are a few problems you can think about the next time you turn on your tap over a bowl of half-eaten pasta or flush the artificial waste down the toilet.
Flooding
Your precious hand-woven carpets soaked in sink water? Shudder. Yeah, it’s best to avoid the possibilities of flooding before we turn to anything else. It hardly needs to be pointed out that you don’t want your house to turn into the climax of Jumanji (although the nostalgia might just make it worth it). Your flooring, carpets, furniture, insulation, building materials, electrical circuits, and even the wood that makes up the skeleton of your home could all get destroyed if you ignore the signs of a plumbing flood. This is one possibility that you wanna eliminate when you call your local plumber for a regular check-up.
Pipe Leakages and Bursts
Take this down- any sign of leakage should be fixed immediately. It doesn’t matter if the leakage is small; ignoring it for its size means that you’re practically inviting it to grow. Your walls and floor are on the brink of suffering irreparable damage, and you’re gonna have to spend a painful portion of your life savings trying to get them all replaced. Alright, now, don’t panic. You need a plan. First, cut off all electrical supply at the mains. Best not to run the risk of letting all that leaked water anywhere near current-carrying wires. Now, fan yourself with the nearest newspaper you can find and call a professional plumbing service to get things fixed for you. Not sure whom to call? Washrooms Start Overflowing
Who decided to put the bath right next to the toilet? Anyway, if you spot an overflow in what is literally the biological dumpster of your house, it’s a good time to declare an emergency. The cause? In most cases, a clogged toilet (that flushing system can’t handle your ex-partner’s fifteen love letters, you know), which must be fixed as soon as possible. Clogged toilets are perfect breeding grounds for all kinds of ugly bacteria and viruses- and we don’t need to tell you what a virus can do. Your plan? First, turn off the water supply to your bathroom. Next, dial the number to your nearest emergency plumbing service. While it may look like a DIY fix could solve the issue, it’s often better to quit the experiment and let the experts handle your problem.
Sewage Issues
If you take an overflowing bathroom and scale it up to three, you get sewage leakage. Not only has your waste disposal system gone for a toss, but you also have to worry about sewage water mixing with your tap water. Not very pretty. Toxic fumes traveling through your sewage system now can enter your house. Pests will arrive not long after, and your physical health will have nowhere to go. Sounds like something you want to prevent?
Call a plumbing expert.
Temperature Problems in the Shower
This isn’t as lethal of an issue as some of the others (unless you’re fatally allergic to cold water). Sometimes, your water heater will hit a mood swing, and you’ll unexpectedly receive a cold draught even when you twisted the wretched knob all the way to hot. Okay, now what? A leakage in the heater, maybe? Check the dripping pan and see if you can spot any external damage to the machine. Turn it off and, you guessed it- call an emergency service. Your heater may not be in the best of spirits right now, and you don’t want to mess with an appliance that works with electricity and water. A plumber should fix it for you.
Clogged Drainage System
At this point, it’s a good idea to point out that a clogged drain is an overarching problem that you should always look out for, and not just in your toilet or your sewage system. Even an otherwise clear drain somewhere else in the house can accumulate grease, dirt, and other tiny bits of solid waste and eventually clog up. Although we’ve mostly covered emergency issues in this article, it’s important to point out that a preventive check-up can remove any obstructive residue before it has the chance to create trouble. Stagnant water is a big no anywhere in your house- least of all in a drain. Schedule regular plumbing checks like you schedule the doctor’s appointment. Your house will be grateful for it- and if you live in it, so will you.
Frozen Pipelines
Not only is it exceptionally annoying to receive lukewarm water for your morning shower, but you might run the risk of not receiving water at all, especially if it turns to ice. In places with moderate to severe winters, the water that’s supposed to travel from the source to your house can freeze in transit, leading to a massive water shortage and several frustrated residents. If this happens to you, bear in mind that you probably couldn’t have done much to prevent it. Dial a plumbing service and get it repaired as soon as you can.
