Why The World Needs More Green Businesses

One of the good things that came out of the COVID-19 pandemic was that we finally managed to give our planet a break. As businesses everywhere stopped production, we also had fewer cars on the road and fewer planes in the air. 

Of course, this was but a glitch in the Matrix for the environment as the world went back to ignoring climate change warnings and scientists. However, it showed us that there is still hope – if we act now.

Luckily, people are already getting more aware of the climate change problem and discussing various topics on social media. Furthermore, younger generations (Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Y) are very interested in living an eco-friendly life and convincing others to as well. Now, all these changes in the social environment are resonating strongly in the business world. 

At first, the businesses that decided to turn green did so mostly to please their customers (the younger generations we just mentioned), but lately, business owners discovered there is a real benefit to being green (besides keeping the environment clean). 

Benefits of & for Green Businesses

Businesses that take the time to learn more about renewable energy and how it works also learn that there are quite a few benefits to living a green life. For instance, businesses that use solar panels or other forms of renewable energy pay less for energy and can redirect funds to other departments.

In addition, when you reuse existing office supplies, furniture, and devices you also reduce costs on new purchases and keep the environment clean from debris and waste. A great example of how recycling can help a green business comes from H&M – the brand decided to implement an in-store recycling system as a way to reduce waste in the fashion industry. 

Other companies try to find better ways to function using sustainable fuels and energy. For instance, United Airlines partnered with AltAir Fuels in an attempt to use low-carbon, renewable fuel that allows them to be more price-competitive. 

Lastly, a green business is a great example for its employees (whether they believe in climate change or not). The fact that they have to be aware of the environment and only use green materials and devices at the office can have an influence on their daily lives. As such, they will become more careful about their personal actions as well. 

Everyone Plays an Important Part

As more businesses go green, we learn that collaboration is more than necessary when it comes to the environment. Everyone has a role to play in the solution, from the company that produces biodegradable coffee sleeves to the company that makes sure to implement eco-friendly harvesting and processing methods for their coffee beans.

As such, as more businesses turn green, the ones that don’t stand out and it’s not a pretty picture. In the end, whether it’s peer pressure or the desire to stay competitive, even the companies that don’t really care about the environment will have to play by the new rules. Otherwise, they risk losing valuable talent, customers, and market share.

So, in order to live in a better world, with clean air and water, we need more green businesses – regardless of their reasoning.
