Why Timber Frame Homes Are Becoming So Popular

It is becoming more and more common to see homes being built from firm, yet aesthetically pleasing, timber material. While the 20th century was focused on stone, metal and concrete, recent times have started swinging back towards wood being the go-to material that houses are made from. There are a numerous of reasons for this resurgence in popularity and we’re going to cover some of them.

Versatility

Ask any of the many building companies why they are building more timber homes than ever, and they will praise the versatility of the wood. It allows for just about any sort of design, whether it be a traditional retreat or a modern metropolitan residence. (You can find examples of timber frame homes here: http://swisslinedesign.co.za.) No heavy machinery is required to make additions or alterations to the home. This reduces the costs of these alterations quite a bit. Regardless of the desired design, the use of timber can shorten the process.

Durability

People might worry that because the homes are made from wood, that makes them less durable. This is a myth, as timber is the material that builders turn to when extreme weather is experienced. Whether it is an earthquake or a blizzard, these timber elements of the home can absorb the shock and impact of such elements much more effectively than other building materials. Modern treatment of the timber ensures the prevention of termites and fungus, so it will last much longer.

Low-Maintenance

The maintenance of the timber homes is surprisingly low when compared to other building materials. There is the need for the occasional re-coating of exterior surfaces every 5-6 years. In the past this would also require the sanding down of the timber, but thanks to the modern version of the building material, that is no longer necessary.

For some, moisture is another concern, but nowadays, the timber used for building homes comes with a moisture barrier and absorbent wood, ensuring that these homes have no problems with rising dampness indoors. This all accumulates to less maintenance for the timber homes.

Well-Insulated

There is a reason that humans have used timber to build their homes throughout history: it kept them warm in the winter. These days, with modern timber and building techniques, the insulation of timber homes surpasses the insulation of other types of structures. Thanks to the timber and gypsum board lining, and the natural cavity found in timber between the interior and exterior walls, timber structures are warmer during the winter months, and cooler during summer.

In summary, some of the benefits that have contributed to the popularity of timber homes include the following: They’re versatile and can be easily modified, they require little maintenance, they are warm during winter and cool during summer, and they’re durable if treated and maintained properly.  Added to this, they are environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing, making timber homes the best option when it comes to having a home built, or expanding your current home.
